Hi, just a notice to any stroke survivors or their relatives, here. I'm involved in a study of a mood assessment instrument and need to recruit some stroke survivors for a short (10-15 min) task. I'd appreciate it if you could pass the link on if you know anybody who's recovered or recovering from a stroke. Thanks.

Details below:

‘Emotiscope’ study: Stroke survivor volunteers needed for short (10-15 min approx) online study (http://www.xvams.com)

A new, tablet/computer-based tool has been developed to assess mood in stroke patients with communication problems; the tool uses sliders to animate facial expressions between mood states. The scales (Dynamic Visual Analogue Mood Scales - DVAMS) now need validating in a small sample of stroke survivors without significant aphasia.

For this essential study, we need volunteer stroke survivors to complete a task of approximately 10-15 minutes. Participants should:

1) be English-speakers who are over 18 years of age
2) have had a stroke
3) be capable of giving informed consent.

People with some aphasia may take part if they are able to understand written or spoken English, as this is required to perform the task.

If you fit these criteria - or know somebody who does - you/ they may take part in the study via the D-VAMS project portal at: http://www.xvams.com. If a volunteer does not have an internet connection, a home visit with a tablet or laptop can be arranged by our researchers if they are within the Nottingham area, UK.

In order to take part you will need to create a username and password on the portal website. A valid email address is required, but it will be used only by the project’s experimenter or supervisor, and only to contact you regarding the experiment if necessary, in line with ethics committee requirements.

This study has been approved by the University of Nottingham, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences Ethics Committee. It is hoped that this tool will be useful in screening for depression and other mood problems after stroke in patients who have serious communication problems as a result of aphasia.

Further information about the experiment and a downloadable information sheet is available here:

Your participation is greatly appreciated.

no stroke but heart attacks and yeh its affected my moods big time, i blame the medication as im not the person i used to be.
Yes, sorry to hear it. Any kind of ischaemic attack is bad and life-changing. This research is intended to help people who've had their language badly affected after a stroke, which happens in about a third of cases.

I hope you improve, and can get back to being more like your old self.

The "within five years" stipulation has been removed. If you have had a stroke, ever, you are eligible to take part. I'm about half way there now, and just need another 20 participants. Thanks for people who already took part.

I have just under 8 weeks to collect remaining data for this project. If you have had a stroke, please help test a brand new instrument based on morphing faces.
D-VAMS or 'Emotiscope' was 3 years in the making. It is not for profit and will be freely available for use on the internet. www.xvams.com
