Hello Everyone,

[edit: Maybe we should rename this the 'Headway May 2009 Group Purchase' thread. I think I will be joining frodus' buy out of the west coast, read the next 3 or 4 posts for details --adam]

My motor and adapter plate are in so it's time for me to move on with my battery packs!

In the next week or so I will be ordering 50+ pieces of the 38120s raw cells from Headway (Victoria) and having them delivered to Houston, TX. If anyone is interested in adding more cells to the purchase I would be happy to split the shipping and/or coordinate getting it shipped to you once the cells makes it to Houston. Post to this forum or email me at `ahambone at gmail dot com` if you are interested.

Also, I had fun at the Houston Electro Auto Association meeting last night - I really talked up E-S as a good resource for EV and battery in formation. I got to check out a couple of really nice S-10 conversions (one DC, one AC). Most of the HEAA folks still run Lead Acid in their conversions. I'm taking the plunge and going LiFePO4 and getting to report my findings to the team. There was a lot of curiosity about what goes into charging, balancing and monitoring Lithium based battery cells.

Cheers,
--Adam

if you look on the headway group buy thread, there is a guy named echas who is asking for participants in a group buy, but i did not hear back from him there, maybe here. also travis and i both are interested in participating, but i think he has his own schedule or maybe needs to coordinate with others at work.

but i can reship from portland if they get landed here.

charles, you still out there? rdnmun@gmail.com

We should really re-organize something.... like HEADWAY GROUP BUY May 2009.... If we get 500-1000 cells, prices drop quite a bit.

I know Our group plans on 3-400 loose cells... within 2-3 weeks. I'm located in portland, OR and can ship from a business via UPS to anyone.

I don't mind taking this on, but all money MUST be sent to us and cleared before the order. There will be a deadline. We want loose cells only, so any BMS must be coordinated and researched and discussed with Victoria beforehand. No warranty through me, only through Victoria. I could ask her to send a few extra cells as replacements if anyone has problems.

All of you know me on this forum, and I've been involved with several EV companies as well as a TTXGP entry. I'm not going anywhere.

Hi Frodus,

I am completely open to joining your group buy. I just did not know there were so many happening in parallel! It sounds like your group is a much larger quantity and I would be better off joining you. I am very happy joining your group and I can pay up front/immediately. I wouldn't expect you to deal with warranty issues - of course that would be through Headway directly.

Everyone involved in any cell or group buy should know to order a couple or a few extra cells so your project is not dead in the water if you have a part that fails. Engineering for failure is necessary when you are dealing with parts that are on the less-expensive side and are shipped in from far away. That reason in particular - the cost of a failed part - is a significant factor into why I am choosing cylindrical cells instead of larger capacity prismatic cells. If a 38120S cell fails I'm out $20 and can modularly replace it. If a SkyEnergy/ThunderSky cell fails then I am out 65$ or $100 or more. The relative-cost-of failure makes these a winner for me.

Frodus, Email me and we can coordinate dates and payment off line.

Thanks,
--Adam

I'd be interested in some as well, probably on the order of a hundred, or so. I'm planning a motorcycle conversion this summer, using one of Mark's big hubmotors, and doing this with a123s, my original plan, is just going to be too much work, I think.

I'm going to put together Order forms that people can email me their order, shipping information and payment type, which I am working on. I need to protect myself from bad buyers. NOTE: I am going to have a refundable deposit of $50 or 20% of the cost of your order, whichever is more (through paypal, there are fees, I will NOT be able to refund pp fees). This will help me seperate out those that are ready and serious from the "talkers". Shit or get off the pot.... thats how this will work as well. I have no time to bicker or email you. If you're not on the boat before it leaves, you're SOL.

I'll work on pricing, can't promise a price right now due to not knowing qty and shipping information.

I'll start another thread once I organize everything, this kind of just HAPPENED the last week or so, and it makes sense.

Realize, that all money needs to CLEAR by the deadline, because I'll wire transfer money the next day or so. I'll know a date soon, expect it to be within 3-4 weeks from now, maybe sooner.

There will be terms of payment. I may have to request a scanned copy of your photo ID and a picture of you holding it.

NOTE: I will only be purchasing 38120S cells with screw terminals.

More details to follow this weekend and I'll start a new thread.

20% up front is fine. When will the other 80% be due?

Thanks for organizing, Travis!

Here's a little of what I'm thinking:

I'm going to require people to fill out an order form with all details and turn in ASAP, that is when 20% is due. I will process the orders on the ORDER deadline. IT WILL BE UP TO THEM to make sure the rest of the 80% is in my ownership and cleared BEFORE the PAYMENT deadline. I will then order once I've got all the funds. If you want to order after the order deadline, the full amount is due before the payment deadline.

This is to filter out some of those that just want a few cells and aren't serious and keep changing their minds.

If someone backs out, I'm going to keep a small fee (10% of the deposit) if they retract.

Basically, if you're serious, you have NOTHING to worry about. If you're on the fence and think you can be wishy washy, I have no time for that....

No refunds on cells once the order has been processed. You will get your cells you ordered. No warrantee claims through me, go to Victoria for that. ALL ORDERS for loose cells only. If you want to add BMS or charger, that is something you must arrange outside of this buy. We are trying to get a high quantity of cells to reduce costs.

Travis,

Do you have any idea on what cost will be per cell?

I'm negotiating right now with Vicoria as well as coming up with terms. I'll start a new thread soon.

NOTE:
I will not be selling cells for cost, although the price will be better than buying smaller quantity cells through headway direct. This is a group buy, but I need to make it worth my time to organize this, arange shipping, and pack everything together. I'm not looking to profit, just make it worth my time. My goal is to get us all cells for a decent price.

Once I get a cost estimate from Victoria, I'll let everyone know the price. I know we're getting at least 400 cells right now just from me and 2 other people.

These are the 10Ah cells rated for 10C continuous discharge, yes?
How much are you asking?
Are these recommended cells for n00bs like myself with limited experience beyond BMS-less LiPos in R/C airplanes?

I need 15+ cells for my DIY bicycle project - I'm told that a 480Whr battery pack will give me a 20+ mile range at reasonable speeds with a light hand on the throttle. If the cells are cheap enough, I might consider doubling up for a 20Ah pack.

Unless you want to run a small motor or have limited range I would go for the 20ah pack as you will get less voltage sag and the battery's will have a longer life.At 36v 20ah is only 8kg and about the size of a 6pack of beer.

If you don't want to play around with building a bms I would order one from Headway to go with your intended pack. Connecting it up isn't hard.

Kurt.

What is the website to order directly from Headway? I am also very interested in buying some cells with this group purchase, but I guess I will need to buy the BMS separately? Where would I go to buy the BMS? Thanks

Jerry

the group buy is over on the may2009 group buy thread.

i think a buncha people will be thinking of buying a BMS and harness from headway too. maybe we can consolidate that too, and pile it on top of the cells, but i suspect it could be separate, but maybe still a group buy of the BMS's

I don't think they really have one.... most of the stuff I've seen is on alibaba (worldwide trader network).

Where does it say we want a cell OTHER than Headway?

You can't do 10C discharge and 15C peak...... and your energy density on Sky is low.

Please don't spam "andy2"

We realize they are totally different. We want the "power pattern" of the headway cells. Your statement is not true.... your cells have a LOWER energy density AND lower power density. Headway cells have a higher WH/Liter and Higher WH/KG than SKy Energy, which is Why we are ordering them and not Sky Energy. Sky Energy is good for cars, not motorcycles and bikes. Your batteries are large and heavy for the energy and power that come out of them. Good for a car, not good for a smaller vehicle with weight and volume limitations.

Please, Do us a favor and start your own thread about your cells, please do NOT post in other threads trying to sell your batteries in a thread about another battery manufacturer. That is what we call "spamming". You came into this thread and advertised and tried to get us to buy your cells... start your own thread and be a real salesman.

Headway is a 5 to 6C cell
where you get the 10 to 15 C figure ???
Dream on

Thanks "pico"... but with 4 posts, I don't thinky you've got much "street cred"... I'm with Doctorbass on this too....

I've got the curves on my website... go look at them, 5, 10 and 15C... 15C isn't great, but thats a BURST... I don't think I ever said Continuous.

might as well buy a ping pack

I dont know if you noticed but pico1 looks like our friend from Falcon-EV. He's uploaded the same graph that our buddy has on his website. Maybe pico1 is taking a peek at our forums. :)

EDIT ADD: Pico's graph at 3C is no where close to Dr.Bass' graph at 3C. Im going with Doc on this one.

The May 2009 Headway Group Buy Customers have started receiving their orders (a few left to go) and no bad cells so far. Shipping was a little slow with our vendor, but the cells are here and on their way into the hands of the group buy participants. It's gone very smoothly otherwise.

Also, I now work for EVComponents doing technical sales and can help design a full working system (batteries/bms/controller/motor/DC-DC converter). We have a large shipment of Headway batteries/packs/BMS/chargers/hardware coming via sea right now. It should be here within 2 weeks or so, and at that point, we'll have the batteries in stock ready for shipment. We also sell Thundersky and Sky Energy batteries as well as motors/controllers/chargers etc.

Please go to www.evcomponents.com for our current price list and . This will be updated with any new products that we may offer as well as any pricing changes.

Don't hesitate to email me at tgintz@evcomponents.com for any questions about our products.
