Hi Guys from Essex UK hope your all well

Im new to the forum and enjoying the posts some of these home built bikes look fantastic like ''Bighit 8t Mac''!! and have pushed me forward in wanting to build my own so im selling my beloved 1998 ZX750R ninja and investing the cash in building a ebike with my brother this year.
I've looked through the sticky's and ''read here first'' posts and i think im up to speed with the rules and most of the FAQ's sooo.....

in a nutshell the only thing i would like to know is can a home built bike be close to the performance of the stealth bomber with out the silly price tag
My build on bike is a 2003 mongoose wing elite pro and i would be looking to go down the rear hub motor route

thanks for taking the time to read this and ride safe

Welcome to the forum.

You can build something equivalent to the Stealth Fighter for $4000-5000. The Stealth Bomber would probably run closer to $8000. In neither case would your current bike be suitable as a starting point.

Much of the performance of those bikes comes from being a bike built to handle . if you just want speed and power similar to those bikes but you don't give an F if the bike falls apart or can stay planted in a corner, or get actual traction in the rough, or stop swiftly and smoothly when you need to, or last more than a day without repairs, then you could probably bang something together for $1500.

A high powered bike needs to start with a good frame and suspension. You should consider starting with a frame designed for ebikes, and a suspension that can handle speed and power.

Your Mongoose is good for 1500w of power or so. Its a good bike, but lets be honest; It started life as a low end entry level bike, and is now 13 years old. You aren't going to turn a 13 year old Ford Escort into a Ferrari, you aren't going to turn a 13 year old Mongoose into a stealth. What you can turn it into is a very capable 1500w Trail Terror. 30mph+, able to chase most scooters and 50CC learner's bikes. and you could build a good bike with it at 1500w for that same $1500. It wouldn't chase a Stealth, but it would be a good bike.

Invest another $1500 in a new suspension fork, shock, wheels, hubs, tires, brakes, bearings, and you could push the Mongoose even further. pushing into the power levels of the fighter. However, at that investment level, you would have been better off starting with a brand new frame like a Qbix or Vector.

Hi Drunkskunk

Thanks for the welcome and reply

Cheers for clearing up the question I wasn't expecting the mongoose to become a stealth but was just interested in the investment needed in a home build e-bike that would be close to its performance.

The bike i plan to build needs to be able to get me to around 40+ mph ideally (pedal assisted) on the flat and have at least 30-40 km range due to the fact i will be riding it 14 km to the train station and then on the way back after work i plan on picking my 7 year old up from school and riding through the forest with her on her bike (another 5 k added to the return 14) and would like it to be fun for me solo in the forest and muddy hills on weekends as im selling my gas guzzling road bike.

im weigh 95 kg's currently and im pretty fit I probably have a budget cap of around $2000. I was hoping to use the mongoose and get my cousin to cut and weld a box into the frame replacing the lower tube like the big hit builds i have seen and to reinforce it where needed as getting a good DH frame is around $600 out of my budget (and the wife will flip if i spend that to gut it up)

i will go have a look at the e bikes you listed

Thanks again and ride safe

After spending the day looking at ebike kits I'm thinking I might go with the Q76R kit as its only 550 euro and that's less then a big hit frame and I think it fits what I need or atlest more then the mongoose he he.

Unless you think the mongoose will be able to meet the above needs I have once reinforced?

Due to the smallish battery space in the Q76r it would be a good choice to use 18650 batteries if you are considering building your own battery pack, these will give most ah for the spacing

There's nothing really special about the motor on the stealths, so it's easy to build a bike that will compare in power and speed to them for $1000 or less. Cheapest route would probably be a mxus 3000 3t with a 20-24s battery pack if you're looking for speed. I've personally had my cheap mongoose over 60 mph downhill with my really cheap 1000W rated motor on 24s rc lipo and 40A controller and I weigh 270 lbs. I did replace the stock wheels and tires, among other things. See sigline.

So you think a 1000w hub would be strong enough for my body weight? 95 kgs

I thought I would need closer to 3000w to get consistent power delivery due to being as heavy as I am and there being many hills where I live ??? I'm Very much on the fence ATM between massively modifying the mongoose's frame and swingarm or just buying a Qulbix kit.

After talking with my cousin a metal fabricator last night he thinks he could modify the frame easily enough but after continuing to read others posts and topics I'm confused if I'm honest of the best way to invest my budget....

So the easy question is in my position what road would you guys take?

Do It once and do it properly.... Get the quilbix frame, unless you like problem solving, as problems will surely arise with a custom fabricated build.
Battery would need to be 20ah for a 'safe' 20 mile run that wont run out of juice... 1ah per mile is a very conservative and easily remember-able estimate for battery range on a ROAD bike.
20 series lipo pack, 84v fully charged will get you to 40mph.
Motor could be a mxus or leaf motor? Both efficient and reasonably priced.

Since I really don't know your position, it's hard to say. A 48V 1000W motor kit is more than enough for most people, and not near enough for others. If cruising at up to 30 mph on level ground is enough, then that's all you need. If you want to cruise above that, then I'd recommend the MXUS 3000W motor on 72V or higher. I run my 48V 1000W motor on 88.8V 24s rc lipo with a 40A controller and can do over 40 mph on it, but for limited distances without burning it up. I can run it at 30 mph all day long without burning it up. I've got a MXUS 3000 that I could ride forever at 40 mph without any strain on the motor. But it's just overkill for me and I haven't rode it at all in months since I built it.

I run 10kw in a 16 yr old frame, u don't need to go get a purpose buildt frame, my bike has set me back about 2k , a long distance from a 10k bike or even a 4k bike, 200mm shockw up front and 120mm on the back, it's pretty sweet for going cheap. I've pulled some big jumps, does about 80 km/h top pulls like a beast. But yeh hand me a stealth with 10kw and I'll take it :) how long will it hold up :) I've done bout 300klms on it so far, most of it on the ruff stuff. But I'd u want peace of mind and don't want to be doing lots of custom stuff, a stealth would rock. I havent ridden a stealth so I could and probably will eat my words lol.

I bought all bike parts second hand, all the Electrics I bought new. If ur doing off road, spend on shocks, spend on big tyres, I run 2.6" , makes a huge difference. And minimum 20 front disc.

Thanks for the reply im just waiting to sell my zx7r then ill be deciding exactly how im gonna go about this.... im still very much on the fence due to the fact i love the look of the perpos built frames and the vector frame is cheap ish but starting with the mongoose would keep the wife happy
