How do I convert a pedal assist to a throtle controlled bike

I am presently looking at getting a I-Zip e bike , one of the ones with the 180 watt hub motor, ni-mih battery pack 24 volt system,
However I want to make it a throttle controlled motor so that I can ride without pedaling, or with pedaling .
How can I do that ?
Can I use the same controller or do I need another ?
Thanks

i hate  pedal assist. i can see why you want to swap it!

it just takes the control away from you. some people may like this but i hate it. often i've found on these pedal assis bikes there is a lag on the sensor and it will still be trying to "assist" you when you are trying to slow down or brake!

throttles are much better. you can keep your peddal cadance to suit you real nice.

Just a reminder. If you have a Giant SuedeE, you can modify the pedalec torque sensor and make it power on demand too. It hits the battery harder and obviously range suffers. However in the UK it allows more fun when you can`t be bothered to pedal.

I was able to by-pass my pedal assist ebike by using a led flasher for bike. unsolder & remove a LED. Solder a low voltage reed relay in place. Cut the wires on the pedal assist sensor and wire the relay to the controller. You also choose your speed by the blinking/re-flash rates from the bike flasher. :)

That's a good idea. I never would have thought of using a bike flasher.

You could also possibly use an opto-coupler instead of a reed relay to reduce power consumption.

Fechter, I have learn something new from you by using the opto-coupler. Very clever of you! In fact, I have learn so much from your posts on controller troubleshooting & modification. I appreciate for your efforts on sharing the information. :)

That's what this forum is for.

An excellent idea to cheat the controller by using the flasher.
You could use the solid-state type flasher instead of relay-type for lower current comsumption.
Your motor is brushed type and is self-starting.

Not all BLDC motors used in pedal-control ebikes are self starting. Some of them are sensorless and /or have no starting torque.

You may still have to pedal-first to 5km/h before the motor could kick in with the modified thumb control.

ThaI'm responding nearly 2 decades after this question was originally posted with relavent current procedure for installing a throttle to replace Candice PAS.
The I Zip E bike with Ni Mih battery pack probably is in museums next to tyronousorus Rex (meaning that bike is way outdated)
I presently have a Cannondale Treadwell Neo 2 which is also a Class 1 E bike with PAS peddle assists. I do not like peddle assist personally and am in the process of doing an easy and inexpensive throttle conversion. The downside of my choosen replacement electronics is th new motor controller will now be mounted where the water bottle would mount. There are several upsides to my conversion and for starters, I will now have a throtle! Also, my E bike will achieve a higher top speed as well as it will have much better torque plus 5 speeds or power settings. Lastly, My throttle comes integrated with a color display.
Theres nothing to show about this install beyond what i have already explaned. My original controller did not have a dedicated plug to add a throttle. This controller comes with instructions and wiring diagram.
