How does this make you feel?

Black stacking... Engines won't survive doing that for long durations.

As far as the pollution? Yes, looks bad, quite sooty but the price you pay for entertainment and pushing the envelope. Drag racers make a bunch of tire smoke which is icky stuff too.

Think of how easy it would be to break up that crowd and send them home.

Announcer: "That was a great race. Attention spectators: Bubba and Jr. are our winners of today's drawing. Head to your nearest convenience store to pick up your prize."

On an observer level it's interesting. I like that they were going up hill with full loads. Really shows he incredible torque of the engines and the incredible engineering of the components.

If you are looking for some kind of reaction in regard to damage to the environment, my reaction is, "Are you frocking kidding me?"

That doesn't bother me in the slightest. I get kind of a kick out of it. I think about all those people that drive Prius' thinking they are saving the planet. These truckers are doing their own version of "carbon offsets" and I like it. :D

These trucks aren't harming the environment anymore than a 1,000,000 Prius are helping to save it.

Think about everything we depend on in our lives. Most of it has been brought to you by trucks. Think about how your e-bike components came to you. At least part of the trip was by truck. Trucks AND truckers are awesome!

First thought: that's some impressive power, watching those chasis torque like that.

2nd thought: I wonder how many of those in the crowd go home that night with lung issues?

StudEbiker: your claims about the environment have no merit. We don't *know* the exact impact of anything. Trying to quantify something and making a judgement off that is nearly impossible. What is not impossible? - Prius's do a GREAT job of keeping the air we (anyone on or near a road) that little bit cleaner. No one is replacing a truck with a Prius.

It's also about options. Do we have the shipping option available to us that says "pay 2x the cost for green shipping of your product". Of course not. Does it mean that if our ebike parts were shipped by oil based transportation that they are not incredibly less impactful than the normal transportation options? I'm sorry if you think that's true.

Do we have the option to buy a more fuel efficient/electric vehicle for our daily personal transportation. Hell yeah we do.

I see your attitude a lot. I think it's a weak argument against clean transportation. No sheet I'm not saving the environment single handily. But I'm also not contributing to giving asthma to the kids who are playing outside their school next to the road. I'm not blasting exhaust directly on a cyclist who is breathing hard. THAT'S real.

Nothing against truckers on my side. They have no options. My dad drives trucks. I've found that truckers are the most responsible road users out there. That office jockey who drives 6 miles to work likely does have more environmentally conscious options than an SUV.

Awesome.
Those look like unmodified trucks. I'd bet a beer that the actual emissions from that race are less that those from your average top fuel dragster race. The fact that it's black sooty carbon coming out of the stacks means little about it's enviromental impact. The most harmfull emmisions are invisable gasses.

I used to work in the diesel engine world, trucking, marine, peak shave power plants, etc. Truckers are pro drivers and you'll find very few bad ones out there working the roads and highways.

Often overlooked when people get pissed about trucking is this - take a good look around wherever you happen to be sitting right now. Now tell us what items you can see that have NEVER been on a truck?

How does it make you feel when you have spend $1000 to put together an e-bike and are out on the road going along at 25 mph and an athlete on a road bike pedals past you at 35 mph?

:?:

There is a dearth of both relevance and logic in that sentence.

Do you think you could get a bicycle capable of doing 35 mph on flats for any sustained period of time for under $1,000 new?

All of which has got nothing to do with the entertainment of two trucks racing up a hill or polluting the crowd's air depending upon your perspective.

Maybe not. All I know is I had a road biker pass me up and within 5 min. he had disappeared out of sight and I would not have thought that was possible if I hadn't been there. It's a catch 22 in part. The fastest bikes don't lend themselves to adding motors. I was on an almost-legal e-bike going along at 22 mph. He was moving too fast for me to engage him in conversation about the cost of his bike.

I was expecting them to be within a few feet of each other when they crossed the line and it looked like the winner was more than a full truck+trailer length ahead. Nuts.

Oh..they could've been running biodiesel, or a blend. I doubt they were, but it would work.

You are right, that the fastest bikes (road racing bikes) don't lend themselves to motors/batteries, that's the biggest drawback to electric. The cost of the road bike isn't that much of a factor, once you spend $1000, you get most of the performance of a $10,000 pro bike.

I am a road cyclist / ex spandex leg shaving road racer. We can go 35mph, but not for long at all unless we get a nice tailwind or slight downhill. How about you meet that roadie on a nice hill and then compare your speeds. I can sprint short hills faster on my road bike, but any longer and the ebike will win, even at 1000w.

And don't neglect the immense physical condition some of us spandex roadies are in. Some train 20+ hours a week, and yes they are amazing athletes. It doesn't mean at all that a 22mph ebike is no good. Ebikes are for commuting and easy play time in some cases. Nothing wrong with a good ebike or a pedal cyclist.

And yes, I don't know why we are talking about this in this truck race thread, no relevance at all.
