Hi, a friends ebike has stopped working. Its a puuyan motor which does not seem to be common but is a cheapish chinese bike https://www.puyuanmotor.com/ . Showed fault 30 on display. Have checked wiring all contacts seem ok. Display shows low or no voltage though battery is fully charged. If I switch off and back on it will run the hub motor for a few seconds on then stops under any load or if run a full speed. It wont run then until the display is switched off and then on again. I suspect it is either display or more likely controller. I am thinking the best option is to replace with a cheap display and controller, (something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100...2a2b!12000050930484958!ct!UK!1902784422!!1!0!) then if that does not solve probably a new hub motor. a new hub motor. Are there any other suggestions?

I have a similar 13A controller with that display. I tried it on a low power ebike and it was too low powered for me. I use it now for a motor tester. The Puyan seems decent, Deserves a little more power ... like 17A-20A,
What's a Fault 30 mean? Are you measuring the voltage with a meter? What voltages did you see?

Many controllers, including the one you linked, and ones sold on the Puyuanmotor site, support multiple voltages. The voltage can sometimes be set via a display, or the controller may auto detect/guess what voltage the battery is. So, let’s say your battery is 36v, but the controller thinks it’s 48v, then the controller will cut power when it thinks the battery voltage is too low. If this is the case for your controller, then you could look for setting in the display setup, or you could disconnect the battery, and fully charge it before reconnecting to see if the controller guesses correctly.
I'm thinking bad battery. I had the same problem. Built a bike and it didn't even make it out of the yard.
Turns out it was a bad BMS, I uh..replaced it and it ran fine for 2 sessions. My solder job of connecting the things was probably
terrible, the tip was about shot, and it's something that needs revisited someday.
That battery is a paperweight right now.
Also the seller gave me a full refund and I bought another one that worked just fine.
That was Hailong. He's who said it was probably just the BMS.
I doubt it's the motor at all. More likely it's the controller, display, throttle, or battery.
Or, like the dude (E-HP) before said: The settings are wrong.
If it's set for a 48v battery and you have a 36v battery, that could happen.

Thanks . Have a spare battery and will test in case it is BMS cutting off. Code 30 means communication error I think, though from what I have read can be loose or broken connections display controller or motor malfunction so not that helpful, though the motor seems the least likely.
Just an update, bought cheap controller and display https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007348386359.html and also tester https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007095265083.html .Seems to have been controller or display. Have tested but not yet on road as broke my arm and hadn't finished connecting leads and soldering connectors.
