Hub motor with integrated 5-speed IG

Interesting that the internal gearing is a 5 speed. Very much looking forward to more info about this, could really enhance the usefulness of a hub motor.

I doubt that the motor itself will benefit from the 5-speed gearing, Rich. I think this will just be like the existing 3-speed hub from Bionx. The only hub motor so far, to have variable gearing for the motor, is the 2-speed SRAM one.

Igh for the pedals built into the hub coud still be nice for those who ride in nasty climates.

But yeah, big big big difference between gearing the motor, and gearing the chain to the pedals. A high low gear on the motor would be sweet for some applications. Or even just a larger diameter planetary gearmotor that was 6 or 7 to 1 instead of 5 to 1 would be cool for heavy cargo bikes, rickshaws and such.

This is GREAT news, so thanks for sharing it :) .

Are there any updates on this integrated 5-speed direct-drive hub motor? I went to their website, but didn't see any new info. Also, does a internally geared hub motor (like BMC) with multiple gear-speeds exist?

Not that I know of. Just external freewheels with multiple gears for the pedals.

They were suppose to announce it at the Teipai International Cycle show in march. I would bet it will be a year at least before we see anything actualy on the market. I would bet they will need to secure enough orders as an OEM supplier before they invest in production of the motors.

As for a Multi geared-speed motor, No. Doesn't exsist. There are multi-speed motors out there that do various things with the windings. Delta-WYE and partial winding tap motors are the norm, but they are of limited use. Basicly, if your motor needs to be able to shift gears to work, you realy just need a bigger motor. And if you can't get any bigger of a motor, then a mid drive was a better answer from the begining.
