hub motor?

hi guys what do you make of this?

worth me investing at xmas or something?
looking for a hub motor (rear for now ) geared capable of speeds in the mid to high 30's with a range of say 20 miles min? 40 miles max

my master plan so far is to buy a cheap full sus bike on my bday (December) then at xmas buy a rear hub motor + bats. then later on add a front motor on a switch for hills / getting away from the lights / off road so i dont use all the juice at once hehe.

more of an engineering thing to be honest i can push 25 all day on my bike (Garry fisher- bitter 2.3 tiers toga i think?) flat out 44 according to my speedo 8) so no rush to do things.....yet although i am very exited

Hard to tell if it is geared or not. They copied most of the pics, including my first built Schwinn that I did not give them permission to use, from the Golden Motors site. All DD motors except the silver one I am not sure of. You can up the voltage and call them more watts all you want but they need to be able to dissipate the heat or the wattage is not very useful in the long run. Probly a bit spendy for shipping. Ask lots of questions and understand what you are buying or spend the extra and buy from someone with a proven record. There are a few in the for sale area here.

Shipping, UK import duty and VAT (charged on the cost plus the shipping!) make buying heavy stuff like this direct from China expensive.

There is a UK vendor for Goldenmotor, Alien Bikes up in Scotland, who have a damned good reputation for supplying kits and parts. The prices seem higher than buying direct from China, but by the time you've factored in the shipping, duty and VAT costs that you will probably get hit with, plus the inevitable handling fee from the courier for dealing with the duty and tax for you, they turn out to be pretty good value, plus you have back up from a decent UK company. I have no connection with them, I just heard of them when they started up a couple of years ago and have noticed how they get consistently good reviews for good service.

so is it usually ok to run hub motors on a little higher voltage/amps? this is assuming ive got it right like voltage= top speed/range amps=torque/acceleration?

Hi scouser, I have had some experience of these hub kits from China.

The hubs are good, but the controllers are not so good.

I would do what Jeremy suggests- try to keep it local.

These hubs require $100 for shipping and even at that, it's 6 weeks.

Then Her Majesties Customs of Excess get involved and rip you off some more.

Then the controller blows up.

Nah...not worth it.

If you don't go the domestic route then try www.hightekbikes.com

They are sensorless, DD hubs, very neat, very handy, and very well recommended by people on this site.

Sensorless. No Hall sensors. Fewer wires.

Going into most Hubs there is a bunch of wires.

3 of them, usually yellow, blue, and green, are PHASE wires.

They are thickest of the wires.

There is then a second cluster of wires, very fine thin wires, 5 of them, these are for the hall sensors.

The Aotema doesn't have these Hall wires. These {Aotemas etc} used to be called "soft-start" motors, you needed the wheel to be rolling a little bit before you gave it the beans.

However, the Aotema will start, pretty much every time, from a dead start, with no rolling.

Very nice motor.
