Well.. someday, there are many thing you couldn't believe to happen like that..

Yesterday, i went to my job with my car (there was -10 degree C outdoor) and ... i forgot my main lights ON...

In the morning our secretary left me an email to help and warn me about that.

I ran in the parking to turn off these but my voltmeter in the car only indicated 8V... and that is bad...8V.... and i just heard the click of the solenoid of the starter.. but no piston in movement....

Too late.. At the end of the day, a great colleague gaved me a lift to my home and I left my car in the parking. The majority of my colleague already left the job to go home and nobody there had boost cables.

Arrived to my home the bright idea appeard in my mind... Can my electric bike 13.2V boost pack could boost my car at -10 !!??

I toke my bike and returned to my job in the parking.

I oppened the hood plugged my boost cable with a diy adaptor anderson connector and i conected both battery together. I ovserved some spark dut to the current flowing into the cable dur to the diferential of voltage...

I have to say that if i had me camera i would have love to toke a movi of that and to put that on youtube!!! The electric bike that can boost a car 8)

I left that few minutes to charge it and then i tried to start my car.

I turned the key and WOW!.. it started the first time i tried!.. in a quater of turn!! I was very surprised because i only expected it to rotate few rotation before it start... I putted mybike on my car and goes back to my house.. happy about what it happenned to me!

Who can believe that 1kg 4s4p a123 could do that!!!!

60C yeah!!!!!!! :D

A123's all the way :D ...

LMAO... awsome.. ! :D

The ebike battery packs can be very useful, we had really bad weather and they announced on the radio that power was out in many places in the province.. i charged my packs just in case.

my 72v 20ah lithium pack will run 6 x 200w lightbulbs for quite a while and keep my living room warm (and bright ) for a few hours..

who needs a genereator lol...

Great going doc !

72V 20Ah!!! wow, that's for power or long ride? or both

I've jumped my car before with a 14a sla that I was using on the currie, but it is a starter battery.. :p

Silicium, you also can built a 36-48V step down DC-DC converter with 12V 100A out.. 8)

Doc, You gotta do a "videotaped re-enactment" of that :!: It's just too good a story not to. In fact, I've got it! Start a for-pay service where you go around starting peoples cars with your bike  Kind of like "Pop-a-lock" does for people who lock their keys in their car  Or-just make a video.
All the best,
Don

Good story!
Not totally surprising though, my original SLA's were sourced form car battery jump packs! ;)

Video done!!

Tonight i re-created the situation and ... i fully empty my car battery again.. but for the test :D

I now have a DV camera so i will mix all scenes and built a video of that...

I'm pretty sure i'm the first guy to do that on the earth.. "a première" !! :!:

I benched only 109A peak with the peak hold on the clamp meter and i expected something like 200-300A

Before to start the engine i left the battery few seconds and the current passing thru the cable was only 4 or 5A
(the floating voltage of the A123 between 3.6 and 3.3 i guess.. and probably that the fact that the empty car battery would need at least 14-16 V to take the current... and i had 14.2 on my A123 4s4p boost pack.

I will post that on youtube soon

Doc..

your crazy rocket scientist!

This morning, it's -28 degree Celsius outdoor. (-18 Fahrenheit) and i tested my car 12V battery to have an idea of it health.
My cai is an integra 2000 with it OEM battery!!! .. 8 years old !! and it is bery small syze like many honda car battery. 55Ah with 430CCA

I installed my voltmeter with minimum volt peak record and my DC clamp ampmeter to see how i can get by a cold temperature like that!

Final results:

-outdoor temp: -28 C
-battery years: 8
-battery type: lead acid 55Ah 12V honda
-V battery no load: 12.06V
-Vmin on starting engine: drop to 7.78V !!
-Current on starting engine: peak to 274A
-Total max power: 2131Watts

My engine crank ran something like 4-5 looong seconds before the engine started.. BUT IT STARTED !!! 8)
