Hi all,

I am excited to find a motor kit that has an open source firmware that has some community following. I've been on the fence for awhile but this convinced me to go ahead. I like DIY and electronics, but don't have as much bicycle building experience.

I'd like to get this kit, I've seen the options on amazon, lunacycle, and then there are these kits at eco-ebike. There are so many options, and they don't go into a huge amount of detail what the differences are. I plan to get a bicycle off craigslist, will most bicycles work? From road bikes, to hybrids to mountain bikes? There are so many different cables and adapters in the kit. What is going to give me the best experience?

It would be cool to do some hacking on it down the road, maybe to play with the sensors, record the data and display it on my phone through bluetooth or something like that. Most of my commute is just a couple miles each way, but I do live in an area with some hills nearby.

Can I order any of these kits and pretty much expect it to work? What tools would I need? What would be a normal charge for a bikeshop to install it if I chose that route?

I am happy that our OpenSource firmware is part of the motivation to get one more person riding a bicycle!!
If your area have some hills, then the TSDZ2 is a very good option because it is a mid drive motor.

Choose a bicycle that is comfortable to you, I guess that a mountain bike with air dual suspension is a good option and may not be the most expensive. The important issue is for you to see if you can install TSDZ2 on it, see for instance here my full suspension MTB and how to install: https://github.com/OpenSource-EBike-firmware/TSDZ2_wiki/wiki/How-to-install-TSDZ2-on-a-full-suspension-bicycle#Decatlhon_RockRider_540S

Since you like DIY and electronics, then take to risk to buy the cheap TSDZ2 you can get and then install the motor and the firmware by yourself.

If you want future logging of the data over Bluetooth, then you need to install the SW102 display.

For the tools you need, see some videos over Youtube and for the firmware, read the How to install firmware wiki page.

Great, thanks for the response. It's also good to hear to start with just the motor. I didn't see the wiki yet, I'll spend some time looking through it. Will share pictures and updates once I get it together!
