They claim their 750 watt ebike goes 40 MPH, c'mon! This makes me want to be the first in US history to outrun the cops on ebikes, brings a whole new meaning to Lycra Hunting.

The IZIP Express™ Police Edition features Currie’s Evo-Drive™ 2.0 technology, which is designed to amplify human power to that of a professional cyclist. The Express™ is powered by a patented dual planetary drive system that blends the power of a hi-torque 750-watt electric motor with human power to create one of the highest performance electric bikes on the market today.

John, what do you know about pedaling to 30 MPH? I don't think a fully outfitted cop on a heavy framed mtb, can pedal to 30 MPH. It may just be that the motor is a 750 watt motor, but the system can peak at 1200 watts?

I don't know many bicyclists that can pedal to 30mph on a road bike with skinny tires, wearing the most silly looking aerodynamic gear..

Being on a mountain bike makes this even more difficult.

As for this bike, 750 watt and 40mph capable? Were these speed tests done on the moon or mars?

So many eBike companies throwing out random numbers. It would be hilarious if the car industry worked that way. Then a prius would have 100mpg and 200 horsepower.

30 mph on a road bike is not that unusual, for the fit guys. Maintianing it for more than a mile is. 25 is more typical for a long ride for sure unless in a peloton.

40 mph club on a non hub drive doesn't sound unlikely either.

I never saw it said, 40 mph on 750 watts. Just that it was a 750 watt rated motor. My death race bike, that did 47 mph easily, had a 750 watt rated motor.

Likely it draws 750 watts while cruising at 25 mph, like many of us do. And draws a bit more, when doing 40. Chances are, 35 mph on the flat is the real speed, and 40 was seen on a downhill too. Ever seen an ebike story without at least a little fudging the speed or distance? Betcha you put a CA on it and you see 1500 watt peaks if not more.

Looks like a REALLY INTERESTING NEW CURRIE to me. I've been waiting for non hub ready to ride bikes to get better, but not 5 thou price tag better. I wonder what the MSRP of that bad boy is?

Edit, MSRP, $3,499.00 Owch! For that money, it better make it into the 40 mph club. Nope, top speed of the civilian model,,,,,,,, 20 mph.
So much for interesting.

My question is, do they have licenses and tags for them, because if they use them at those speeds they would be breaking their own laws. ;)

I just threw 30 out there. Call it 25, or even 20 if you feel the need, but my point is that the combination of pedal effort plus electric assist is pretty easy to get to a 40mph peak speed. All it takes is the right gearing, which is the missing ingredient for a typical hubmotored ebike that tops out in the 20's with or without pedal assist.

The cop version could be overvolted, or have a different motor winding, or both. The stock 20 mph one is 36v.

It could even be just a software change in the controller that unleahses the cop version.

Awesome!

Meh. I say lettem' try and catch me with that wimpy lil' hardtail

Diabolically, KF

The rear hub looks like the most interesting part. Left side belt drive, SA geard hub (by the looks of it), with a gear cluster on the right side. Could be very handy for a lot of the build going on here. There is no parts list for that bike on the currie site yet though. Would be nice to see them sell the rear hub on its own.

Or nice to find one at the flea, sold by a guy who thinks it's broken and only wants $20 for it. I hope they sell a LOT of em. But at that price, they won't.

30mph on a mtn bike with front suspension is not easy, but doable for mtb racer types, but only for a short sprint. Road cyclist sprinters, run of the mill local guys can get 35mph if they are strong. The roadie racers can get in the high 30mph range. But really, wind and even the slightest downhill makes a BIG difference. So yeah, I've clocked it up to 43mph on a flat road on my road bike in spandex all by myself (no electric, as I said spandex riding). I use to give cars/trucks hell as they'd come up on me doing 45-50 and I'd open it up and go from 20 to 41. yeah, maybe I had a tailwind or 1% downhill, but it was 'flat'.

The group I use to ride with would sustain 30-35mph for the last 6 miles of our ride, mostly flat road. That's elite amateur level racing performance. The pros aren't much faster, they just can do it longer, and all day long.

Damn I miss real road riding. Damn 'city' life nowadays... :|

But anyway, numbers in a news article are meaningless. The thing to take away is that the police are trying ebikes. End of story.

That will be a first; when a cyclist gets pulled over by one of those. I don't see any criminal types riding racing bikes clad in lycra spandex with pointed helmets, maybe they're chasing the homeless guys riding dumpster junk or little old ladies on market 3 wheelers that they can't keep up with. The standard opener: "May I see your license, registration, and proof of insurance, please?" may become "Can you tell me your volts, watts, and battery chemistry, please?". Oops! I don't see any lightbar, maybe it's an irrational fear of mine haunting me from the 60's.

Yeah, it almost sounded like they have issues with spandex roadies outrunning them. Who would thought that was something LAPD needed to address

More likely target is the cycle couriers or punk kids on skate boards who can outrun a cop on foot and out maneuver a cop on a moto or in a cruiser.
