Lithium-Ion cells reading 6.5V?

I just unpackaged some laptop batteries and when I went to test the voltage on the lithium ion cells I got many to read 6.5V. I was under the impression that 4.2V were the max for these. Can someone please explain why I'm getting such a high voltage?

Are you sure you are checking a single cell voltage ?
Are you using a reliable volt meter/mmeter ?
Do you have the pack open ?, what size cells are they ?....18650s ?

What volt meter are you using? Many will start reading higher than normal voltages as the battery in them dies.

I third that,, check your voltmeters accuracy, it might need a battery.

Precisely why I still keep a simple $10 analog voltmeter around. When in doubt.
