Making a 16s A123 AMP20 battery, BMS suggestions?

Hey guys,

Long time lurker here, but only recently registered to post some PMs to buy agniusm's AMP20 kit and see what Jerry Battery was all about with his "high quality Lifepo4" blah blah blah...(If I ever pay $35 PLUS shipping for a pouch cell, well, I'm an idiot).

Anyways, I recently scored 20 A123 AMP20 cells, and I'm planning on making a 16s battery using Agniusm's 16s kit (looks stellar by the way, and relatively easy to make). I'm needing suggestions for BMS though. I've sent an email to ping to see if he'll sell me a signalab v2.5, and I've been in touch with Linas regarding his Smart BMS with LCD screen (which just looks awesome), but I'm wondering if anyone else has any suggestions for a 40-80A BMS for 16s Lifepo4? Any help would be awesome!

Thanks guys!

How many amps are you looking for ? I have a ping high power BMS 20s and I love it.

the flashing lights really make all the difference for me. nice to watch and see what teh cells are doing.

Unfortunately for power hungry applications it's not the best.

Looking for a 40A continuous.

Its going on my KMX Cobra build (using Crystalyte HS3540 on 26" rear, Infineon 40A Controller).

I'm not looking for anything insane, just enough to keep up to traffic (50kph/30mph) for about 30-40kms.

Yea that's about what I am pulling now no problem on the signalab. I have experience with 3 bms so far and it's my
favorite , but not the most powerful.

Just looked up an old mail from ping this normal 16s BMS is 47usd. High rate 16s BMS 78 usd. Shipping 20$ takes about a week.
20s High Rate was 94 + shipping.

That was on 5/24/2012

Id also get a charger from him if you do not have the right one as it's cheaper to include the shipping , but your call.

he told me the high rate BMS could pull 60 amps on the 20s I purchased only stats I have.

Reason I like the signalab is when the cells are fully charged they light up and flash as they balance so you have a visual.

So yours has the LEDs? That means its a v2.5 doesn't it? I was under the impression that Ping didn't sell his BMS individually, but right now I'm waiting for a reply for him. If he does sell the signalab BMS, that's the way I'd like to go, although the "new generation BMS" that Linas posted about sure looks slick! http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=35696

Yea he sure does sell them just does not advertise and no warranty if you just buy the bms.

Yea that other BMS looks awesome just probably to expensive for myself.

I like the Ping signalab high power 10fet bms with led's. It might charge higher than the A123 20ah cells like to live or rest after charge. My 2-12s A123 20ah at 84v off the hyperion is 3.59v and after 1/2 mile it's 80v. and stay's to 78v. So is that extra voltage just weak float in a large format cell ? Don't know where that vltage goes ? Easy 18ah with no bms to 3.2 - 3.3v. Proably only test. Caveman style.
The headway bms has a lower hvc as those cells I think live at a lower voltage than pings cells. May because of the higher ah format 10ah ect.

Well, I ordered a Signalab from ping, and I'll also get a Smart BMS from Linas when he has more, then I'll put both of them on the pack and see which one I like better. Thanks for the input guys.

I bought the high power 16s signalab bms for $78 USD plus $20 for EMS shipping. It should do the trick nicely.

I very much like my 20s one. Wish he made a 24s one , but 20s is the biggest he does.
Let us know when you get it all setup please.

I've spotted here Infineon controller mentioned. Where do you buy these? I am revising my cargo project and wanting something fast. Need beefy controller like 24 or 36 mosfet. Thanks

Believe it or not, d-day. June 6 has pretty special significance in my family, 2 great uncles died in the Canadian assault on Juno beach.
