My 48 V controller has a LVC of 3.5 Volts average per cell.

I have no idea of it having a HVC.

Would the blue magic smoke come out at say 60 Volts?

As seen on this forum, one can run a 48 V hub motor at 72 V.

I want to go higher than 48 but if I buy a 72 Volt controller its LVC will be above 60 Volts.

Are there 20-30 A controllers with variable limits?

Most 48V controllers will survive 63V.

Those must have 63V Electrolytic Capacitors which can be verified by opening the enclosure and visually check rating on the large capacitors.

If your 48V controller is paired with an LCD display, it will usually have a HVC of 60V limited by the display unit. Otherwise typical LVC voltages are 10.5V times (system voltage divided by 12) to accommodate SLA batteries. That puts a 72V controller lvc at 63V. Perfect for 18s rc lipo or 20-22s 18650 packs, depending on what cells yo use.
