hi, i received a 12v29a meanwell today when it arvied there was a capacitor rolling around inside, so i open it up and soldered it back in place.
when i turned it on it seemed to be ok, so i put my mulitmeter on to see what voltage it would go up to and turned the trim and then it turned off and blew smoke out.
so i removed the lid again and found the capacitor which i did not solder had blew. any ideas how to fix it :?:

Oh dear. Looks like the power supply was set for 110V and you put 220V across it, blowing the heck out of the cap (or you installed it backwards).

Green PCB won't be a meanwell, but a clone. Those ones have been rather shit by all accounts.

It looks like i got ripped off, it said meanwell on ebay :x The power supply came 220v already set so i left it alone because im in the uk 220v ok here. I will remove the capacitor to double check i had it the correct way round.

I do know the S-320's used green PCB's. That's not a very good test of its authenticity.

Does it say Meanwell on the power supply? Does it say Meanwell on the PCB? Its not common to have issues with a Meanwell out of the box, but it IS common for a Meanwell clone to be broken or fail immediately. Definately check if that cap is backwards. If something failed past the big cap venting, the supply is most likely worthless. When they fail, it tends to not be a super simple fix.

Just had a look at the power supply it has the MW letters but under the MW it says meang wel :(

Green light will come on and it will pump out 12volts but the capacitor gets really hot very quickly, so i turn it off as quick as i can.

Where would the best place to get some capacitors from in the uk and are they expensive?

It usually mean that it's mounted backwards if it's heating up that much. Have you checked that?

Meang Wel you say? Those guys are crafty.

I would inspect all solder joints, and the cap is probably backwards. The QC on this stuff can be AMAZINGLY poor. I purchased a few clones years ago with no issues. The quality appears to be going down by the day, people have issues with these ALL the time. They probably should be avoided, more often than not, they're not reliable.

just recieved another psu today from the ebay seller today. I turned on the power to test it and the green led did not light up . so checked to see if there was any power coming out of it, there was only 1.1volts and there is a faint clicking noise aswell. I opened it up and there was nothing obvious to see

so now i have to broken psu 's

but i did notice that i did fit the capacitor the wrong way round on the original psu

so should i take the capacitors out of the new psu to put them old psu because it was putting out 12volts, or try and find the fault with the new psu any ideas :?:

Swap a cap over to the old PSU. If it's still working, it should be fine.

These things never fail to amaze at the low quality. It's looking like half of them are DOA, and a good portion of the working ones end up failing rapidly.

Hotrod,
There are a few threads on MW power supplies here on ES. Details and pictures. Who to purchase from, what good ones and bad ones look like, etc. You can save yourself some agony by reading about anything first and purchasing later.

just swapped both capacitors over from new psu to old psu. I powered up the psu and it worked 12volts :D :)

thanks for the replys :D

You are lucky that the cap didn't explode being backwards!

The clicking will be protection - over current or over voltage, chances are that someone has put the wrong component somewhere. An output of any kind is a good start, welcome to the wonderful, fun-filled (and occasionally explosion-filled) world of SMPS repair

I think i was lucky that the cap didn't pop i turned the power off very quickly, i think if i left the power it would have popped

I think i will leave the clicking psu for a rainy day, but to be honest i would not know were to start on it.
