Two quick questions:

Question 1:
Can the tiny mitsubishi pickups, or kei trucks, be driven legally on the road in Mexico, Central America, and South America?

Question 2: I have a northern tool 10kw 230v generator head that I can't sell. Nobody wants it. :(
It's Italian made with a giant shaft and bearings. I also have a couple of different 520 chain drive setups for it.
Could this be run as a motor? What kind of controller would I need to use? Should I rewind it?

I googled this stuff for a bit but didn't come up with much. I found one of the little trucks for a great price and if I can convert to electric so I can get 50 miles a day at 45mph out it, and I can use the generator head as a motor, it might make me rethink riding the bike down there.

I've wanted it since you started trying to sell it. Been out of work until a couple weeks ago and couldnt afford it. It still can't quite work out how I would use it. But still interested.

I love those little trucks. I think Dihatsu makes some too.

I can't believe using the genny as a motor would be very efficient.

Not too concerned about efficiency. If it will get me 50ish miles a day faster than a bicycle, it might work for me. I could charge the batteries with a few solar panels, waiting a few days for a charge between trips. I've already got 8 trojan T-105 deep cycle batts that I could wire up for 48v 200ah. I'd probably be better off selling those and getting a bunch of smaller cells so I can get the voltage up there though. The hard part is finding a controller! The generator head has three wires coming out of it. Two 120v phases and a neutral. To make 110-220 60hz, it has to spin 3600 rpm. I wish I knew more about the AC stuff!

I'm probably going to endup building the assist trailer and riding the bike. I figured someone would have worked out a plug any play light ev drive train by now but I guess everyone's still waiting on batteries to come down.

Trade generator head for an agni or etek powering the front wheels, leave the gas engine driving the rear wheels as backup? Hybrid?

I'm somewhat excited about the possibility of having a vehicle other than a bicycle for this trip. I hope I can figure it out!

Once you get out of the USA, with the 5 ton pickups, you will see a lot of those types of trucks used in business.

I believe there was a conversion posting on the DIYelectriccar forum, also.

I have a couple of aircraft generators that are used as motors. They are wound as sepex-compound, or so, and, difficult to find correct controllers.

Try to contact Major. He is a guru of motors-generators. Probably some guys here, also. Go over to the DIYelectriccar.com site. They convert all sorts of stuff on that forum.

You need to find the articles on the GM Eassist alternator, that is driven by the engine to charge batteries, and used as battery powered motor. There is a post on the ES from Nuts&volts, that had some interesting info, and, I believe Luke had some input. Nuts&volts is a regular on the elmoto.com site, and that Eassist motor-Generator had some input there, also. A couple of guys are playing with them.

This is a much better idea than biking through Mexico and Honduras. 8)

Just talked to the guy about the truck! It's mine! He says it smokes a little but runs well. I can fix that! He's either going to trade me for my solar stuff or wait for me to sell it and then pay him.

I'm thinking that the parallel hybrid setup will be the way to go, with the electric driving the front wheels. Maybe I can use a toyota IFS pickup front diff, axles, and spindles......

Off to go research!

If anyone wants the generator head get in touch and I'll make you a heck of a deal!

New question......How the heck to I insure this thing? lol!

I just spent an hour over at diyelectric car forum and found zero useful information. I thought the search function here was crappy! lol

Anyway, it looks like I'm on my own for this one. Probably going to end up using a monster scooter hubbie and a 36 fet, just for simplicity.

Anyone know where to get the eig 20ah cells in bulk?

First link here. There might be a website link in this video.

Second link here. The one I was thinking of.

Neither are Mitsubishi, but, close enough to give you ideas and info, perhaps ?

It gives me the idea that this might be out of my price range if I pursue traditional methods. At $4650 for the AC50 motor and controller, I'm out of that game for sure.

I'm not giving up though. Off to look at some monster hub motors!

I learnt to drive in the van version of this model Suzuki LoL Was fun on the highway
when windy blew across two lanes... Alot of motorcycles have larger engines, our
Van had the 2 stroke engine baaaarp baaaaarp HAHA

I just found out that I have a three cylinder, 50hp diesel to put in one of these things! Going to pick it up next week. Also found a few more kai trucks similarly priced and nearby as a backup plan in case this one sells.

I'm going to use toyota running gear, running the diesel to the rear wheels and an agni to the front through factory toyota ifs stuff. I still need to find a good deal on an agni, controller, and some 20ah eig pouches. I know its out there!

Just have to sell the solar setup and/or the rv and I can get started.

So a friend saw the truck that was supposedly being held for me heading south on a trailer today and the seller isn't answering calls...... humans....

I found a few other options for them but am not sure I want to go through the effort of building anything else. I've posted all of my good stuff for sale and am getting nothing but responses from people like me....people that don't have any money...

This thread is probably dead.
