"The Blair Witch Project" has to be one of the most over-rated, but I'd hand that title to "Paranormal Activity". Both are absurdly ignorant, shallow, uninteresting, boring, bland, predictable movies, which you do not want in a horror film.
One of the scariest films I'd ever seen, even though it wasn't intended to be a horror film, even though the film itself is laughably goofy in many ways, is "Soylent Green". To think that collectively as a species we really ARE doing that to our one and only planet and risk leaving that sort of world to future generations... and that a lot of what that movie predicted has already come to pass at least in part(reduction in living standard for most Americans, corporate control of food supply, fresh/unadulterated/unprocessed/unengineered real actual food becoming unaffordable(or for those living in food deserts, unavailable) to most Americans, loss of civil liberties, collapse of biodiversity, resource shortages, ect, even though our current reality is not nearly as dire as that the movie depicted, things are trending in the direction of its setting).
One of my favorite horror films is an old and obscure French film titled "Delicatessen", by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It's a scifi-horror-comedy in a post apocalyptic setting, and features a delightful level of grotesqueness and absurdity to go with its comedy. Here's a trailer:

My favorite horror film ever, by far, has to go to "Threads". It's an attempt to realistically portray the effects of a nuclear war, even if it may be a bit dated, even if it isn't a "good" movie, its effort and intent and lack of nicety makes it what it is: truly scary, and I love it for it. If you've never seen it, watch it, now(be patient, I found the first half or so to be boring, but when it gets interesting, it stays interesting):

Most of the new horror films are bad. Even A Quite Place which was recognized as good. Although it's the same as all others
I'm quite fond of Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects", but find it more funny than horrific. There's a certain lack of subtlety combining over-gratuitous violence, intelligent commentary, and humor in most of Rob Zombie's films that are perfectly executed, to where you can't distinguish between the violence, intelligent commentary, and comedy from each other because they are all one in the same. His characters really make the films what they are. Examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-uMtPqMtis (even a Pagliacci reference at the start; "Laugh, clown!")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kZUcjdEReI (the humor here is quite realistic, well thought out, and even reminiscent of my own childhood)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoWDl4RSyGQ (forward to 1:27; it'll be hit or miss depending on what you find funny)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP6AIIaV1QU (The stereotyping here is as hilarious and over the top as it is representative of some of the real people I've come across)
I'm looking forward to watching "31" when I get the chance. The scenes in Rob Zombie's films are more often than not more complex than they appear to be on the first viewing, even if there's no subtlety at all with regard to the violence itself. I really like his style and his characters.
Also, I found the recent film Brightburn by James Gunn to be a great horror film, even though I didn't find it to be scary. It was well thought out and witty though, and the concept was quite original and something I'd never seen before. Definitely an interesting take on the superhero genre, more than the horror film it was intended to be.

The original Alien movie. I've never re-watched it, even though I really liked Aliens. I also like Prometheus AND find it scary. The last one, Alien Covenant? I thought it was frightening but such a downer that I don't even consider it good horror. There seems to be a rule that every other Alien movie MUST suck ass.
Dude, all of the face hugger cuteness more than makes up for the movies' flaws. How can you NOT love adorable little face huggers?
IMO, the original Alien is the best in the series. I like its slow, creeping buildup to the infamous chest-burster scene.
Never saw Alien Covenant yet. I should do it. For the face huggers.
