Most powerful EV battery pack ever?

Stop looking for affirmation from members here on the E/S. They'll just smile as your efforts burst into flames as group entertainment.

Umm :? , I don't think any decent members here on ES would find CroDriver's pack going up in flames anything to smile about

Apparently you're in the Bevis and Butthead fan club, "uh fire, haha fire, duh"

CroDriver,

I am affirming that your hard work and dedication to this EV project should not be discounted by a sideline douche. That green machine you're building is a sweet ride! Good luck!

We'll keep that around for posterity...

Criticism is good. It's the way we learn. It's very difficult to take when it's rammed in your face by a stranger whose background you know nothing about though. Lighten up a bit eh... You talk with authority, so what is your background?

Nine post and they all suck. Do something more impressive and document it. Or just bitch at people more talented and interesting than you. Or you could shut up so people who are actually accomplishing something won't stop posting for the benefit of us who are here to learn.

Have you ever tried to make a headways cell do anything exciting? I've overcharged them to +28v then -28v, charged at 150amps to 16v, shorted them with busbars, shot them through with an aluminum crossbow bolt multiple times, smashed them in a vise, cut them in half with a hacksaw, and finally, the only way I got one to do something exciting took 15minutes with a 1800w heatgun blasting on it until the organic solvents boiled and vented a flamable vapor that lit. The steel can of the battery was glowing before the solvent would boil and ignite.

If you know a magic trick to get one to do something exciting, please do tell. I was stabbing things through full charged cells repeatedly, and grinding the layers together with no ill effects.

I would feel comfortable building carseat for my baby out of headways cells.

And if you don't believe my test results, they are on video in HD on youtube, or do like I did and buy a couple dozen cells to test them yourself.

Just like the others who thought they had a smart reply. I feed on this stuff. Keep it up.

I think he's going to save this one for posterity. He likes doing that.

I know you're the prince of the idiots here. You'll help to get someone hurt, and then what will you do?

You can reproduce, but can't keep a relationship together. It says a lot about a person.

I like the critic comments but I would also like to hear what is wrong with the pack. You think that the load frequency will mechanically stress the cells causing failures? How to prevent this?

I'm not going to cool them because they perform better when hot. I know that's bad for their expected cycle life but I can live with that.

The terminal straps on headways are flexible tabs grouped from the edge of the current collector (extremely vibration friendly termination method). The can is steel. The tabs can flex, the can can flex.

This guys concern is vibration wearing the current collectors through the separator until it shorts. It's simply a non-concern, perticularly in a racecar application.

When you crush the current collector layers together through the separator in a headways, it spot vaporizes the shorting area harmlessly, ending the short, and even when you do force the cell to short over a wide area (such as the many puncture tests performed on the cells by myself and others), nothing exciting happens.

I would just say you need to keep an eye on the pack and watch for any cells cracking. If this starts to happen you might need to re-consider the bus bars you are using and go with something which allows some flexibility so each cell is not mechanically coupled to the rest of the pack by the terminals as it seems to be now. I was thinking about the straps that are typically used and was thinking that a kind of braided copper strap would be more suitable. I've seen this kind of thing available, maybe I'll give it a try.

Very nice pack! I've been driving on a 3.6KWh pack (5px24s) pack for several months now. I'm about to take the plunge and expand it to a 48s pack, doubling the voltage. Nowhere near what this EV pack looks like, tho. Really impressive!

Cheers,

Can you give us an update Crodriver. Did the Headways hold up.

Have you moved on to an even MORE powerful pack?

This reminds me of hearing about a Government Science Project To generate a LASER by dumping thousands of liters of Liquid Gases to gether in a reactor to produce the energy for the LASER Pulse.
What they do in Private Science Projects is another thing.

There's been some interesting debate over this Pack. If you could just get a dollar for every read, you could start your own battery Tech Lab.

Hi

It did the job quite well

And YES, we're building a more powerful and yet lighter battery pack

Just a sneak preview:

Congrat for the ev dragster.. it's a wonderfull project !

I have a great suggestion for you Crodriver:

Why dont you use the "old" Headway battery pack to quickly recharge the new A123 battery pack in the pit during the drag race  .. The only source able to charge your pack so quickly would be a 600V 3 phase AC source!

but since you probably use less than 1kWh of energy it might not worth it?

Did you measured how much energy ( Wh) it take for your top run on the drag lane?

Doc

Neat pack. Try this experiment. Charge the pack up fully. Point a video camera at it, turn it on. Wear asbestos underwear. Connect the fat red wire to the fat black one. Inquiring minds want to know...

I almost finished my new battery pack.

A carbon fibre-lexan-aluminum housing is waiting for the cells in the car.

What do you guys think, is this the most powerful EV battery ever...?

Wish I had a pic of my headway cell pack..

I took 120 of the 38120s' and made a 36v 100ah battery pack for my electric chopper trike..
After playing with different amperage controllers/BMS', I found it to be very dangerous on a 2000w 20" motor/wheel combination. 55 to 60a generates ALOT of torque on that size wheel.

I've since bought 12 100ah Thundersky cells.
Alot easier to wire up and hooked it up on my trike with a 750w motor, 30a controller/BMS combo.
Lots of torque, top speed (limited by a Cycle Analyst) to 20mph and was able to go 140+ miles distance...

I'm in the process of buying 40ah TS cells (qty: 24) to make a 72v 40ah dual drive trike..
Once I get it setup, I'll post pics!

Thats sweet. Do you connect the terminals of one cell straight to the next with a threaded coupler? Looks like they are tight end-to-end.

Do submarines count? 400V X 40,000 AH circa 1955. They are making them with Lithium-ion now - could be 100,000 AH if they just swapped lead batteries for Lithium Ion. Quieter than nuclear at a small fraction of the cost.
