Hi,

can anyone tell me if they have this motor MY1018 24V 450w and if so can it be safely overvaluted ?

http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/united-450w-24v-dc-brushed-gear-motor-440-rpm.html

I would like to run the 24V 450w at 48V though I'm sure it may get hot, but I can live with that as long as it don't just fry it

and if anyone could point me in the direction of a better price it would be appreciated , the bets I could find with postage to the UK is £64

thanks

Stef

Small chance that we can give you a definite answer.

You can find out for yourself if the motor will take 48v.
Run at at 24, see how warm it gets.
..then at 48v.

If it gets warm at 24v, then don't run it at 48v. I'll say you'll probably cook it.

the trick imo is to keep the watts reasonable. let's say you don't want to take any risk, then buy a 10 amp 48v controller. at 480w input, it will be under 450w output. and it will be more like a pedal only bike, meaning it will go fast downhill and slow up.

Currie paired these up with 35A controllers, so 48V 15A might be reasonable. Use a BBQ remote temperature probe to keep from overheating it.

thanks for the replies

I may go for the 36V version then , I have a LB-37 that is rated at 48V 50Amp (it's spare so I would like to use it rather than buying a new one) do you think this would fry the 36V 450w version of this motor ?

thanks

Stef

this may help ,

Use the temperature probe and some throttle restraint.

one temperature probe ordered £1 of ebay

what sort of temperature would you say is to hot ?

apparently http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=14369 someone says they have ran a MY1018s at 60 v !

Wow. 60v has got to be some crazy rpm for that little sucker.
yes and it sounded angry... pedestrians could hear me a street away
btw this motor is still working with 5000+ km

would love to try the 24v at 48v but I just don't know !

i'm using it on my 500w dirt bike. it has 2 speeds, 20a on high, 15a on low. LOW PRICE $10

I experimented briefly with 56V, 54V, and 46V with the 24V currie motor, and all where 'angry bee' loud. I didn't do any sustained high speed and I tried to be judicious with the throttle. The next step would have been a temperature sensor because it was hard to discipline my throttle hand. It was quite spunky.

It will depend on where you put the temperature sensor, but just watch the display when stressing the motor and you'll get a feel for when to back off.
