I am hearing some talk that Biktrix, who recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign with the Juggernaut mid-drive Fat Bike (see http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63964&hilit=juggernaut) may be releasing a more affordable entry-level mid-drive bike soon. The new bike would retain the overall design of the Juggernaut including aluminum frame, Bafang mid-drive motor and display, and multi-speed shifter/derailleur, with some of the other components scaled down to entry-level versions.

For example:
  • 36V 350W motor instead of the Juggernaut’s 48V 500/750W motor
  • Generic 8.8Ah battery instead of the Juggernaut’s higher end 10.4Ah or 11.6Ah battery
  • Shimano Tourney components instead of Shimano Alivio components
Not sure what the price would be, but I’m hearing less than $1000 and perhaps as low as $799, an excellent price for a mid-drive bike.

If this does roll out, I personally think the risk of dealing with Biktrix on a crowd-funding basis is fairly low. I understand they are on track with the Juggernaut build and in fact a few have been delivered to dealers already. See http://www.crazylennysebikes.com/biktrix.html.

Not only that, they’re Canadian (like me) so they must be trustworthy!

Nothing released yet, but I’ll be keeping my eyes open.

I am on their mailing list and I got an email from Biktrix a couple of days ago announcing their next bike for a short term price of $799. I think it was supposed to come out in a few months...
