That chain line is going to be ugly unless it’s a super narrow super flexible chain not great for ebikes.

The cheapest Japanese made Shimano stuff seems to be the sweet spot for me

There’s nothing cheap about 12 speed. The chains wear out fast, and they cost an arm and a leg. Maintenance is constant, because those systems only work right when everything is perfect. My observation about 7 versus 8 versus 9 versus 10 speed systems has been that every time you add a gear, the precision required in adjustment, alignment, and parts condition roughly doubles. I have seen nothing about 11 or 12 speed systems to break that pattern.

The recent drivetrain development I’m excited about, that I think is far more relevant to e-bikers, is Microshift Advent. That’s a 9 speed 11-42t, or more interestingly an 8-speed 12-42t system that you can buy all of— shifter, derailleur, and cassette— for less than the typical “one by” cassette all by itself. It will be much, much cheaper and happier to live with than any 11 or 12 speed setup.

I have never seen an ebike rider using so many gears. Most are really using 3, maybe 5 with the weakest motors. Powerful bikes need only one, for we ride them like motorcycles anyway.

As above, five speeds are fine for a 1000w, 52V errand bike and three speeds (11-17-28) for a BBS02, off road system. With five-speed (friction) and 8-speed (indexed) components, they are inexpensive and reliable.
