New folding solar e-bike

A couple of weeks ago while doing some treasure hunting (read: dumpster diving) I found a schwinn folding electric bike! Pulling her out of the dumpster, I saw that the wheels needed respoking, the tires needed replacing and the battery box was missing. So after building a battery box out of some used ABS, using batteries I had lying around (which I also got for free), cutting some new spokes and buying new tires/tubes I had a new e-bike for about $30 and a couple hours of my time!

Here's a picture of her.

I decided to add a couple of small solar panels on the back just because I love to put solar panels on anything! Wanting to keep with the whole folding theme of the bike, I decided to make the panels flip out for charging and fold down for riding.

Oh yes, the panels were found while dumpster diving as well.

Everything on the bike works like new. There is a small dent on one side that I can easily ignore. My one big complaint, however, is that it's a single speed and geared rather low forcing me to use the e-assist almost all the time in order to go a reasonable speed. Seeing as I already have two e-scooters, one of which I also found about to be picked up by the garbage truck, I didn't really have any need for this bike other than the fun of fixing it, so I gave it to my landlord. We'll see how he likes it when he rides it to work this week.

Now thats a real treasure! Nice!

Man I wish I had local dumpsters like that...

I'll second that!

Thirded.

FWIW, you can get some good stuff out of the furniture dumping areas in apartment complexes if you got one. I got a Xerox machine to take apart from there once.

Dude, what kind of town do you live in that peoples, throws out perfectly good ebikes. A heavily obese one i bet if people keep throwing out unused ebikes.

That's what happens when people break their toys and are too lazy to fix them I guess. To quote A Brave New World "spending is better than mending." I suppose that's the mentality of many people these days. Myself, I hate throwing anything away but when I find something new that I can recycle in any way, I have to admit that I get a little excited!

I'll put up a picture of the other scooter that I found. She's a real beaut. Everything worked when I found her, but she needed a new rear wheel as the aluminum frame was destroyed. Even the batteries where at about 120% capacity! The best part though, is that she gets a top speed of 42kph without any modifications!

Sometimes things just can't be mended though. I bought a brand new auto-rotating cat ball on Saturday with "follow along mouse-on-a-string" and it lasted all of 10 minutes. Dammit! Well... I wasn't about to give up so I opened her up and sure enough... the nylon gears had been munched! Those pesky nylon gears! Why couldn't my cat ball have had metal gearing!? Argh! Now I'm out $15! :x

Get friendly with your towns recycling department. I get all my bike parts for free, now. even got a Peugot frame an Im using the chainwheels!

We started a bike co-op: we teach inner-city kids how to repair & upgrade bikes, they can earn-a-bike by learning. The cops give us impounded bikes they don't auction... most need only minor repairs. Many spare parts are available to co-op volunteers.
