Hey all,

I have a 26" rear Inter3 Coaster Brake type hub wheel which I want to use with a 3spd adapter I got from tppacks and an RC drive... the question I have - do I really need to disable the coaster brake? I suppose adding some form of interrupt when the hub back pivots would be needed to prevent motoring a brake applied wheel and "snap" but otherwise - can anyone thing of an issue using a coaster brake type rear for an RC build?

Not sure what you mean about hub back pivoting. To make the coast brake engage you have to apply reverse torque to the drive sprocket at the hub, ie try to pedal backward if it was on a regular bike. How is your electric drive train going to do that without a reverse on the motor?

Hmm... good question. You'd need some sort of way to detect the back pedaling, and then you could use this like a normal ebrake signal, to cut the throttle.

Out here, there's a crapload of beach cruisers, most of which are single speed with a coaster brake, or 3-speed hubs with a coaster brake. Only the higher end versions even have a front brake. I'd like to convert some of these, with something like a 9C. but then there's be no brake at all. I thought about using regen, but ideally I'd need the same sort of back pedal sensor.

Gary,

Your talking about front hub conversions right?

Rear hub I would just throw a freewheel and a pull on the right side to actuate the ebrake :)

I do know what your saying though, it seems most coaster style rear hubs do back walk a tad when you try to brake them... the torque arm (or positioning arm depending on perspective) holds the hub body but the backward motion is translated on the right side (of my hubs) and there appears to be a small amount of material around the axle which pivots or turns with the back pedaling... To that end, I'm looking at methods of using that mechanical action (not much action I tell ya) to trigger a cutout.

I suppose I am in the same position as all the townie and cruisers so better figure out if this is to be an issue or not...

Although with a freewheel for pedals input, I don't think backpedaling will do anything... so it's only at the motor level I need to be concerned (RC drive).
