no more pictures. gross. i have made it a life long habit to avoid the authorities when i do remodeling. but when i added a floor onto the top, they got annoyed.
Yeah authorities and government departments are a pain But got to have it done legal if i dont want problem selling the place in the future or getting insurance.

It was really frustrating dealing with ACC, public hospital and the local council all in the same week. All being either national or local government entities.

Sitting having a celebratory drink now although my next problems will be the mandatory building inspections during the build. Its my first majpr renovation but my dad who had done a lot of renovations is going to help.

When there is more interesting pictures ill upload them. Bound to be an oh shit what have i started post once the asbestos removal company removes the fibrercement Off the side of the house.

Im now seriously looking foward to getting back to work even though part time next week.
Yeah i imagine a whole addional floor without permission would get their attention.

This day just keeps getting better. Got an email from work They have a nice easy task for me to do on monday that requires me at work for a few hours so i will make use of the ACC funded taxi to get to/from work which will be my first time off my property in a couple of weeks :D.

yep, had to have an engineer sign off on it. but small town US is nothing like what you guys down under have to go through for everything you wanna do.

in greece everybody cheats on their taxes but in the US there is huge market in people remodeling under the noses of the appraisers. to avoid having property taxes raised for the improvements you make to your own property!!!!!!!!!

that is why i don't want the city to know about my charging hot spot because then they will expect me to get a business license and all the governmental guidelines to stifle common sense.

there was a stack of that asbestos siding in back of my house when i bot it. the old man who bot the lots and houses before me had removed it and piled it all up, saving it to reuse. people would do stuff like that back then. now there is oodles of money so everything is trashed.

anyway, i made it point to get those shingles to the dump before some inspector discovered it and condemned my yard.

Our building consent process got more complicated now that everyone is trying to cover their arses after new zealands leaky homes crysis. Google it if interested.

Not easy for homeowners to dump asbestos containing materials at dump here.
Probably harder after people including builders were proscuted for illegal dumping of asbestos in the christchurch earthquake cleanup.

Some maybe because the same profile was available with and without it Might be possible to sneek by but The profile on my house was only made with asbestos and because the place was built in 1972 its about 10% of the panels Makeup. I was plesently supprised at the price to have professional and liscenced builders take it off the house and dump it. Nowhere near as expensive as i expected.

That will leave the wall clear for me to replace windows with double glazed ones. Insulate the walls and reclad with modern matrrials.

My first part day back at work went well. was good to get out of the house.
wrote some code to monitor a comms link and collect a few stats. Not a hard task but useful for the fpga engineer working on the other end of the link. The link works but this is an enhancment. Also added a few outputs to allow external measurment of comms latency.
Only did about 4 hours work as planned with a long lunch and catching up with coworkers i was ther a significanbt part of the day and got home exausted. Had a quick feeD then went to bed really early.

Felt really good to do something productive

Crutches were a pain for even the office due to distances so coworkers pushed me arround on an office chair. Im being measured for a wheelchair Tomorrow. Which will be ŕeally handy arround work.

At least i can make coffee and get it to my desk without spilling while on crutches. Thermal mug with closing top is solution although top not perfict seal hence do it slow

Ricky, good to hear you're getting along better and able to work a bit.

Yep definitely good to be back at work part time. Did another 4 hours today. Second day i have been in. Came home exasted and very hungery. I think i am using way more energy than i use to probably due to the combined effects of healing and extra energy to use crutches.
Im really supprised at how much food i ended up eating after i got home Before sleeping. Waking 4 hours later and eating more.

Might try taking a really big lunch compared to normal on friday. which will be my 3rd half day after the accident.

Still feeling really guilty about the impact my time off had to the rest of the project team at a really critical point in the project.

Getting really annoyed looking out window at my bike... keep wanting to take it out for a ride but that would be way too riskey for my leg... probably related to the amount of time where i havent left my property but the couple of trips to work so far gave been good to remove the temptation to try and ride my bike.

That reminds my my lipo is probably quite a bit above storage voltage which isnt ideal and its been sitting since easter saturday. Dont really have convienant way to discharge and running the motor aint going to happen as i have no way to lift the rear wheel off the ground. I somehow ppicked the bike up immediatly after accident but now on one leg it aint going to happen.
Oh well the extra ccharge is probably only shortening their life a little.

Yeah just dont really have any suitable lightbulbs. 240V ones probably too high resistance and don't have enough 12V halogens any more for 50V.
Actually dont have many lightbulbs left now. Most of my house has LED and the less used rooms CFL.
Got to be something fast i can keep an eye on because i don't run a BMS and that combined with being tired that could be bad. I should really build a FET based active load for testing power supplies and batteries anyway but No time at the moment.
I could use my accucell charger to take 8s and 4s blocks down but thats a bit of mucking round but pretty safe for the cells.

Since i regulary charge the evening before work and the pack stays at 4.1V per cell overnight im not too worried but since its going to sit another month at least i should do something. I think the cells were around 3.9v. I need to check as i might have remembered wrong.

The sooner you get back to riding, the sooner you will heal. At least that's always been my personal approach, and I'm certainly not a doctor. :)

Put your bike in a cold shady spot if you aren't willing to drop the pack SOC. However, you know that you could just ride a few miles and drop the pack SOC.

Yeah the ride a few Kms crossed my mind too Luke but if i lose banance to the left my leg would be pretty unhappy. Especially with the only way i could get it off my decking is to ride it down steps
2 june i should be able to put weight on leg and start physiotherapy it might get ridden.
the muscles on my left leg have really wasted quickly since easter saturday.
I imagin its going to take a bit to build them up again.
the Physiotherapist keeps telling me i shouldrnt be planning my house renovations for mid june... got help so should be ok.
Im going to have to be careful as there is a big patch of skin covering my knee and below with no feeling and then altered sensation further down my shin. They cut nerves to put the metal in.

Its comming into winter here and its under shade so 10 to 23 degC typically so hopefully cool enough.

For the moment im just working
on getting the leg straight and moving freeer.

Went into work on friday For 4 hours. Just before i was about to leave i was invited to see "my baby" running. The first production machine just before shipping. Described as my baby because i wrote and led a lot of the software development over the last couple of years. Really annoyed that i missed the last 6 weeks due to my hooning.
The hardware guys and production and other software engineers put in heaps to produce the new machine too so its nice it all finally come together rather than just a prototype.
It was quite a hop down to the MV test bay on crutches since the wheelchair to help me get there hasent arrived yet but since i was only observing it didnt matter i was tired from getting there.
Its always great to see the first production machine running.

2MW for several seconds from supercaps :D.

Seriously had mixed emotions from seeing it. Great Its working really well but sad i missed the final stage due to my hooning and causing team mates to have to pick up my part.

Took some new photos of my legs. The muscle wastage looks really bad. just over 5cm in circumferamce on the muscles of my thigh.

The musclewasting photo is with my legs lifted. My left leg muscles feel like jelly. All flabby compared to the right

Still about 17days till im possibly allowed to to put weight on my leg :(

Do wiggle your toes habitually if you can to speed recovery. Doctors say that when you have a plaster or fiberglass cast on to do that with your fingers or toes to stimulate the nerves and circulation which might facilitate healing. Due to prior, current, and constant injuries, I do it all the time. (People must think I'm wierd, but then again I daily gather dandelions in a bunch and carry them home in my little lunch cooler to feed like candy to the tortoise.) In other words: they're right! :D

Yep wiggling my toes. Rolling my ackle since it hurts much less than it did and moving my knee/leg arround. Trying to free things up. I seem to have pretty good range of motion and slowly the stiffness is going although first thing in the morning thimgs can be a little stiff.

The wheelchair has arrived at work and used it for the first time. Just a little to get use to it round the office as its mainly to help me get to The test bays but i found it good in the office too. I came home less tired and my right (good) leg was much happier. Trying to use crutches at least some of the time at work as i move my left leg for balance automatically moving the knee which is good but this is the first day i wasnt sweatting at my desk after lunch. Also easier to carry lunch and coffee on a wheelchair than on crutches.

Yes had to lift the front wheels but the wheelchair has some unnecessary devices to limit the ability to do that Although easy to remove LOL
wheeliebar.jpg

Joked to guys at work i have two turnigy 80-100 180kv motors maybe i should friction drive it LOL.

In other news a coworker came off his lowish powered front wheel drive ebike on the way to work today cracking a bone in his arm so in a cast and since he sits beside me at work its going to look pretty funny when he returns to work . His wheel slipped on loose stones.

I can just picture the water cooler convos at work,my ebike injuries :) but having wheeley wheels on your wheelchair is a sign for friction drive.

Analysis of throttle response in my accident.
First if all to lift the front wheel i was getting up to speed (25 - 30kph) then rolling the throttle back to arround 500W to stop accelerating then i would give a sharp twist to get the front end up.

Hardware setup:
Direct connect cycle analyst v3 to 12fet controller and mac 10t rear motor woth magura pot twist throttle.

The cycle analyst was configured to allow use of the pot throttle with the controller expecting a hall throttle. It was also configured to make the throttle behave like a current/torque throtttle.
It was also configured so that below 5A battery current the current rise rate was set slow. I did this to attempt to always have the sprag clutch locked before applying real power as i had previously blown a clutch up at 1KW launching hard too many times and after going to arround 2.1KW I wanted some extra protection.
Above 5A i had the rise rate set as fast as possible to follow the throttle to allow fun.
i had the fall rates set fast so as to not have throttle hang after release.
This all worked well apart from one instance that my leg/knee wishes didnt happen.
The clutch was surviving well.
When i attempted the last wheelie I didnt watch the Watts but i believe i came off the throttle a bit too far dropping the current below 5A briefly which then had the effect of delaying throttle response for a short period (100s of ms) which I think caused me to grab too much throttle before the wheel came up. Basically behaved like turbo lag.
This lag sometimes and not others depending on how much i backed off the throttle made things a little unpredictable especially since I didnt realise that would happen before the crash.

The nonlinearaity and delay are two things that are bad in control systems.
The delay in feedback to be of the throttle response caused more throttle which then came on hard when the nonlinear rate change occurred.

This should act as a warning to be careful how you set your cycle analyst up because both delay and nonlinear/step changes are not the best.

I think i need to fine tune these settings to get the low power part to lock up the clutch quicker but still slow enough to save the clutch. Either that or get a friend to weld the blowen up clutch solid.
The other solution is to finally finish my motor controller project where i control the software and can make things smoother. Too many things to do and not enough time. Apart from the last 7 weeks where i had time but doing stuff was pain or i was too tired.

Finally fired up my 3d printer yesterday for the first time since my crash. Still a pain with a non weight bearing leg to get arround my hobby room. My office chair doesn't roll well on carpet. But was good to have another play.

Hopefully there aren't too many spelling errors in this post. I had to take a couple of tramadol as i tweaked my sore shoulder the wrong way a couple of hours ago and i find on tramadol i really have to try hard otherwise my typing and spell checking seems to get turned off  .

Discussion of the throttle response should probably occur in my other thread to keep it in one place http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=69663

Another update.
With slowly increasing my hours up to 6 per day at work ive been up more on crutches and my shoulder had been getting worse because of it. The shoulder was initially listed as sprained in the doctors certificate but now im using it more and tried lifting things with it its seriously crunchey and clicky amd hurts way too much for an 8 week old injury. Lifting a full coffee mug to my mouth hurts and crunches or clicks badly but at least thats my left arm and im right handed.
Im not feeling huge pain from it but my body is reacting like its in pain by sweating and altered breathing patterns when i use it too much. kind of think i have messed up pain thresholds based on this and when i was in hospital. Going to get doc to look at it at my next appointment in just under a week since its never been xrayed. They just checked range of motion after my accident.
Been staying off crutches at work using the wheelchair at work as that stresses it less.
I have found i can concentrate better of i take tramadol pain killers in morning and again at lunch but only one capsual each time. Any more and i go downhill and cant debug software effectivly. Actually need to take the second about an hour after lunch as the morning one was still having some effect and i briefly had effect from both at once today so just chose tasks that didn't need my debugging skills.

Actually had to do a minor configuration change on a linux server and was worried of screwing it up so instructed a coworker to do it and although he didnt know everything he is savey enough to prevent major server breaking mistakes LOL.

My leg is feeling pretty good. Just a little tight /achy at extremes. Much better than over the weekend where it was stiff and aching but i think i overdone things over the weekend trying to do too much.

Still looking foward to tuesday next week when they will hopefully allow me to start putting weight on my leg and apparently they would like to schedule physio to start on the wednesday to get me walking again if it has been healing properly.
They are also arranging an excercycle For me to loan and use at home. As soon as i can do several km on that i think i will take the ebike round the block staying within a few km of home in case of failure. I really want to get back on my bike rather than relying on taxis as acc only covers taxis to/from work and medical appointments and i just want to go for s ride away from home and work.

After a discussion at work one lunch time i worked out the equavalent fall onto a hard surface due to gravity to get the same m/s as i was traveling just to put things in perspective. Worked out my leg saw equavalent to falling from between 2.5m and 3.4m onto concrete with a bent leg is it as pretty clear my foot dug in rather than slid. Kind of explains why my leg broke...

My shoulder is seriously bad. Only managed 4 hours or work today. Took 1 tramadol so i could concrntrate but the pain was comming through that and i was sweating and breathing funny... i seem to have a funny pain threshold where my body reacts to pain but i cant really tell difference between minor and severe pain.

With loud music in headphones as additional distraction i manaaged to debug and modify some communications software. Answer a few codeing and design related questions before lunch but then took more tramadol and waited over lunch for it to kick in before using crutches to get from taxi into my house. So only managed 4 hours of work today which is annoying but at least i got something to work. I could have taken more tramadol but if i did that i wouldn't have been debugging software lol. Its a fine line between pain management and messing my brain up enough to stop me debugging software :-(.
Reaching arround behind equipment to plug in cables and instinctivly using the nearest hand was bad. I hate the bone conducted crunchy gratey sounds...

Oh well quite weekend after tomorrow then my schedualled appointment at beginning of week. Decided not worth getting an early appointment As i have enough pain killers to get me through and i have things that really need to be done this week rather than spending time going to medical appointments.

Another update.

Had the 8 week appointment at fracture clinic. Im now allowed to put 50% of my weight on my leg. Since my left shoulder is getting worse the doc showed me how to use one crutch on my right arm to get 50% load on left leg. It is good to put weight on leg but at times it feels like it wants to go put from under me and too much for too long and the muscles ach. The surgon said to me that he didnt think i realised how badly i screwed my leg lol. But he did thinknots hralling well

The biggest problem now is my shoulder is causing pain and due to my high pain threshold i sometimes end up sweating or felling hot and not being able to concentrate while feeling little pain. I know its related as moving the shoulder causes that and heavy fast breathing. All the doc gave me was diclophenac which should reduce inflamation and help with pain and paracetamol. No more tramadol. Tryed to go to work after appointment and was really hard to concentrate. Basically of opinion diclophenac is usless and paracetamol does nothing. At least last week i could take left over tramadol and if i took just enough i could actually write and debug software but today felt like crap and useless Going to try work again tomorrow but if pain related issues crop up might have to go to a gp and try and get some good pain meds.

They xrayed my shoulder and are going to contact me with an appointment to get it scanned with ultrasound and then decide what to do. Hope they dont tatake too long.

The doc suggested keep using wheelchair when i need to get arround a lot as the leg gets achy from being up too long. I leave wheelchair at work as not practicl at home.

Muscles that havent been used for over 8 weeks are definitly protesting a bit

Update

After some pain issues with my shoulder and getting proper painkillers im back upto about 6 hours a day at work for now and now the pain issue is being delt to i started physio today.

Mostly just the lady figuring out what i could and couldent do.
I can balance on my right leg for >20secods but on my left for barely 1 second.

Since my left shoulder has been getting worse with crutches ive been using just one crutch on my right side but that tends to male me lean which will mess up my right shoulder neck back etc so she is keen to get me walking without a crutch.

That was good cause ive already been trying arround home. After she saw me walk/limp a bit without crutches she seemed happy enough to give me the go ahead to do it at home if i felt up to it as she decided i was unlikely to fall.

She gave me a few things to focus on like my left foot keeps turning out so i need to focus on keeping it straigh to work the tight muscle that keeps pulling it left.

Definitely finding if i push the leg too hard the muscles ach enough for the next day i have to take it easy for a day but the day after that every seems to improve.

Also been given some stretches to do hourly.

Got on an excercycle today for just a few minutes at light load with seat really high to protect my knee from bring bent too much
And felt pretty good. Minor aches arround knee but overall pretty good.

For some reason she dosent think its a good idea for me to ride my electric bike for a while... will still happen soon i think. I just want to be a bit more stable walking without crutches first since my left keg is still pretty week but getting better daily

It is really good to be able to get arround without crutches even if slow and slightly sore from muscle achs and only for a limited distance.

I find if i tell myself there is no pain i actually walk better. Kind of stops my brain trying to protect itself from pain that dosent eventuate. Kind of weird.

Got to see doc tomorrow as i got some unpleasant side effects from diclofenac over the weekend so stopped taking it so now i have a choice of paracetamol (usless) or tramadol but cant take too much of that. Too much tramadol and i cant write software and yet without it i cant write software with pain or its effects.

Doc replaced diclofenac with slow release ibuprofen which seems to be ok. It Doesn't stop eveything but good for lighter achs and got anti-inflamatory effect for my shoulder.

Now that i have the loan excercycle at home i have been getting on it a couple of times a day but until my muscles free up i have to have the seat really high as my knee hurts too much when bent too far. Also got the load set pretty light but only managing about 5 mins for now but its a start. Quite oftofoften afterwards its slightly easier to walk arround with or without the crutch with less tightness and muscle pain.

Its kind of weird every time i get up the first few steps ach and then things settle down a little and it depends on how much i have been using the leg as to how much muscle ach i get. I guess muscles that havent been used for 8 weeks are having to stretch and grow. I was supprised how quickly they wasted away.

Had a weird ach today in middle of the numb skin over the bottom of my knee. Rubbing it didnt help of course by rubbing below the scar fixed it. My brain hasn't figured out where the cut nerves go or dont go yet

Looking at my bike i finally unjammed the chain from between the front cog and front derailler. Must have got jammed when bike dropped or i fell off depending on how the pedals moved. I also found a second missing cable tie lol. Wasnt important. Just something i had rogged up to stop the seatpost carrier rotating and rubbing against the tire. No sign of it. The other one was one of the ones holding thr top battery pack but i knew that was an issue. It was half cut on the aluminium before the crash. I even had stainless steel ties to fix that. The battery was held by several so stayed with bike.

I guess i need to measure the front wheel spokes so i can replace the one we bent round an adjacent one so i could get home. Thd nipple had failed and i have had nipples on that wheel fail before. The entire spoke is there but not sure i want to try and straighten it. Just a straight 14gauge on a 26inch wheel so should be pretty standard although im still not really capable of vositing any bike shops so mighy see what i can find online as it would be nice to have the bike back in full usable condition when im ready to ride again. I better do some about ebrake cutoff switches or sensors too.

Once i get my bathroom renovation out the way i want to get back to the software for my motor controller project as it was pretty close before i got busy and it has better smoother throttle response etc.
having to rely on my dad a lot for the building work for my renovation due to my trashed leg. Was going to learn from him and do more myself but to get things done in a reasonable time he's getting stuck in while i limp arround slowly. Can still learn a lot though that i can use as the house renovations continue.

Now the big machine at work is working with released software i might be able to get my head back into my home projects.
6KV(work) vs 60V(home). Just a matter of scale.

Kind of funny on the small version of the machine at work the phase currents are similar to my motor controller but with 6KV there is a lot more power.

renovating the bathroom. the worst of all remodel jobs to do while living in the house. when i bot this place i had to remove all the plumbing in the house and start over with new sewer and drain/vent pipe and all new hot and cold service to 3 bathrooms instead of the one original. took me over a month to have a toilet working again. no fun.

i had to tear out walls and break out the concrete down to the sewer lines under the floor, then rebuild the ABS drain/waste/vent pipes up through 2 floors and then rebuild the walls in the bathroom and lay new flooring, replace the cast iron claw foot bathtub in it's original spot on top of the new linoleum before i could even install the toilet. so all the walls in the bathroom had to be rebuilt and painted too before i could put the tub back in place. whatta hassle.

Hi All,
Been a while,
I've been really busy ramping my hours up to work and managed 39 hours last week, my target is 40 so pretty good.
My leg has been getting better but still aches when cold and when I get up from sitting etc for the first few steps.
My shoulder that I landed on after my leg has caused the most trouble. It really does not like me spending to long on a computer which is difficult when I write software for a living but after a cortisone injection and physio and my doctor finding the right combination of pain killers I finally got up to 8 hours a day.
My doctor finally put me on a slow release tramadol so I didn't get bumps of too much which were stopping me writing software.

With nearly 8 hour days and over an hour of physio each day I have been pretty busy. I can feel the difference in my leg but the shoulder is still not great yet.

I have tried rideing my bike pedal powered a few times once I could do 30mins on an excercycle but I haven't managed to get off my property until yesterday. The turning motion would always make my shoulder hurt bad.

Yesterday i managed to ride around the block twice under pedal power (batteries removed) and my shoulder did ache from the turning so probably not going to go any great distances yet. I also found my knee aching a little just above the scar which I don't get on the excercycle so I guess using different muscles when balancing.

I had my parents come down for a few weeks to help with the renovation. My dad ended up doing a lot more than would have happened if I hadn't had my accident. Careful planning allowed the plumber to move the toilet in one day While my dad did some flooring replacement. Currently the old toilet is in the new position and will stay that way till the vinyl is in. The new toilet location is where the old shower over bath had leaked and destroyed the chipboard flooring so along with repairing the floor joist the flooring was replaced with a fibre cement product which should be more resistant to the problems on moisture.
I don't have a shower yet and the old bath is reinstalled temporary in the location of the new bath. Had to save just a little more because my accident put a small dent in my savings. I will likely order the new bath in a few weeks, the shower cant go in install the vinyl is installed (wet area shower) and that needs the new bath... I did have no bath for a few days so washing with a flannel in the laundry was necessary but not too bad. I have to order things in the right order to get the cash flow correct but so far the budget isn't looking too bad.

The bathroom side of my house now has linea weather boards but needs sealant trimming and nail holes filling although most of it is hidden nailed it is face nailed at the ends. the face nails are punched below the surface then will be filled, sanded and primed. I replaced the soffit at the same time as I had the asbestos company remove the 1970s fibrecement hardies shadowline I had them take the asbestos containing sheet soffit down at the same time which made it easier and safer to put the bathroom vent in the new stuff.
At the same time I installed thermally broken double glazed aluminium windows, insulated the wall with R2.8 Pink batts ( best rating for 90mm wall) and put up ecoply barrier instead of a traditional building wrap. This is a 7mm thick power coated treated plywood. I also added a 20mm thick drained cavity behind the linea. all up this adds about 60mm to the thickness of my wall. The house already feels warmer on that side.

Now I need the weather to cooperate as I have 90 days to paint the linea.

That was a nasty break job, I'm glad it has healed nicely. Your remod looks great too.
Just a little idea for you: do you think that longterm use of painkillers can actually cause forms of tension that could produce/aggravate muscularskeletal and joint pain? This was my impression from personal experience. I doubt many md's would confirm it though, they just are taught to think that way, round here.
But imo, painkillers are very dangerous. I've seen and/or felt firsthand.

Very nice blog sir! I'm glad you're doing well now, that was one hell of an ordeal you've gotten thru!
