OutriderUSA reviews?

Don't have a recumbent nor have I ridden one FWIW. But from comments from those here that have performance oriented electrics on them prefer suspension due to faster speeds and better handling. The pics of the Outrider models don't offer any with suspension, even the pricier $11.5 K model.

Outrider USA used to be called FFRTrikes. You can do a search on the forums for their exploits, including winning the last ebike race up pike's peak.

I've called up Tommy a few times and he's been really helpful on the phone. They know their stuff. Their customer is a high end one and not hobbyists like us. This might not be the place to ask for reviews. the 'bentrider' forums may yield more results - just a guess.

Thanks for the tip. I have registered over there and see there is lots of trike info. I appreciate the info! :D

The tiny 250w front geared hub on my roadbicycle says "Outrider" on it, but this seems to be an unaffiliated group.

Just note that you're going to be paying A LOT of money for that trike. You can make a DIY build by getting a frame kit and sourcing the rear hub motor yourself and save a couple of G's in the meantime.
Good point, and after reading some design pages and your build thread, I think this is something I could do. Thanks...I'll explore that option. :D

Anybody able to point me to actual customer reviews of OutriderUSA's line of e-trikes?
Or better yet, anyone have experience with them?

I never rode a KMX Trike (thats what an Outrider trike ist based on) but I'm riding an ICE Sprint FS 26 etrike for two and a half years and more than 8000 miles now.

Sure mine isn't nearly as efficient or as fast as an Outrider. While I think the motor, drive and electricle part of the Outrider trikes are great the KMX chassis isn't the best base for a really fast etrike. I know here are some members who will not agree with me and build and ride real dragster etrikes out of KMX trikes and thats fine.

Non the less I know what I've got (the Sprint is a really nice handling trike with a short stroke and stiff front suspension) and after some experimenting with different setups and wheel sizes think I've got quite a good idea what a really good and fast etrike should have and what not.

Don't get me wrong I think the Outrider trikes are great as a turn-key, high power etrike package. The Pikes Peak race prooved they work very, very well.
I just don't get why they bolted $1000 wheels and a $1000 drive train on a budget trike frame.

I'd rather install the Shumaker drive in a better handling full suspended trike (like a Steintrikes Wild One or HPV Scorpion FS 26) or go the cheap and easy way and use a hub motor instead.

If you want to go really fast and really economic at the same time, while benefitting from the added weather protection for daily commuting and have a $8000-$10000 budget, a e-motor equipped velomobile would be the most sensible choice. Thats what I like to do.

I somewhat agree with you on this one.

While I've enjoyed my KMX I always disliked the idea of taking it past 30mph. The steering feels too sensitive. I get the point of RC mid drives and such. Unfortunately the way Outrider did it makes it expensive and unique. To that point you could make a 30-35mph trike for less than 2.5K easily if you source the parts yourself and know what you are doing.

To the people reading this thread and considering a hub motor powered etrike you could get the KMX trike in a frame kit minus brakes and rear wheel.

~900$

You then buy the rest so that you can pick up whatever you like. You'll need;

BB ~25$
Front Crank $60
Front Brakes (pair) $140 (203mm BB7's YEAH)
Rear Freewheel and Derailleur ~$45
Shifter $18
Tires Tube $80

So far you got a total of $1268

Your Choice of: $1200
Rear HUB MOTOR
Controller
Battery

That is basically it. The math is simple. If you really need to go 40-45mph then buy an outrider trike or fork out some 5g's more and buy a zero motorcycle and be done with it. Otherwise the sub 2.5kw will put smiles on your face even when commuting.

Thats exactly my point. 30mph is the usual top speed with my ICE Sprint on the flat and it behaves really easy at that speed. Even at 42.5mph top speed (when feeding my tiny oil cooled and steel geard Bafang SWXH with 92V) it never felt twitchy. A ICE Trike (HPVelotechnik, Steintrikes, Catrikes as well) can handle that kind of speed simply better...

I'd like to disagree. There are a lot more choices between a budget KMX and a Zero motorcycle. Thats like saying you've only got the choice between an old VW Beetle with Porsche motor or a Bugatti Veyron... :D
