Please help paraglider get back to truck.

Hi all, I'm new to the e-bike forum and e-bikes in general but have always had a fascination with electric transportation. Anyway I'm currently renting a BionX bicycle to see how it performs on the steep mountain (volcano) that I live on in Maui. I live at 4000 foot elevation and pretty much anywhere I go from my house is up or down the mountain. What I'm looking for is a bike that can travel short distances (less than 10 miles is ok, but with a lot of torque and speed to handle the hills here) I'd like it mostly as a retrieve vehicle for paragliding. Park the bike in the landing area, drive to launch, fly down, ride bike back to launch. toss bike in truck and head home. Anyway the BioX is fun, but certainly not the bike to handle a 3000 ft. climb back up to my car. I've been looking into kits, and prebuilt bikes, but haven't come accross anything that comes close to adequate. Thank you for any advice!

I would take a look at this and talk with Doug the owner. This bike may cost more but you get what you pay for. It has torque and the best battery I know of -- and I been lookin fer years! I've ridden this battery and frame over my mountain for over a year, with perfect results! I did eventually upgrade the gearing and brakes.

PS The above Cyclone/Nexus set up looks very interesting. We must see how the Nexus gears look after a 1000 miles of mountains though. Maybe ask if others have time tested the Nexus and ask that owner/builder how it does hills.

:) No seriously he is a good person to ask, I dont know if the Bionx will cut it to be honest, you would be better off with a setup ala Randy Draper (Mauisailor) on here or a suitably geared hub motor ala the Puma or a dual xlyte.

Even an old currie motor with strong Lipos or NIMH will climb very well.

You can gleam a lot off this board if you have a poke around

My husband Brad is a paraglider here in Colorado. I read him your message and he wants to know how the paragliding is in Maui! I bet it's beautiful! I'm waiting for him to steal my BionX in order to do the same thing you're talking about! :)
 
It's not a kit but the Optibike went up 14,000 ft Pikes Peak here in Colorado. http://www.optibike.com Of course you'd need tons of extra money for that one! :shock:

Ya, but once you got all that extra mulla out of your wallet you'd be sooo light you'd go much faster!

Do you hang glide at poli poli? I ebiked the trip up that road to the park many times.I bet the binox or any other ebike or kit will not make the first 1/2 mile.
How about just using my 5 lb motor and a 14 lb battery pack to power a 2 foot pitch controlled prop at a loaded 3500 rpm to fly your glider for a extra hour to fly back to your car. for power take offs :?: :?: OR just put prop blades in the 3speed Sram Hub wheel and make a bracket on your hang glider to carry a 35 lb ebike. for hang glider propellsion or land transport.A fixed landing gear with wheels would make for a nice hanglider trailer behind the ebike. :?: :lol: :lol: I was thinking about this idea while watching my friends hang gilde and driving them back up at poli poli 30 years ago. Ask Scott at the cyclery for my Napili number.

PS I'm meeting with the Mayor tonight along with over 1000 friends to talk about about Saving Honolua Bay from adverse development and invironmental issues. I figure its time to point out that our ex mayor (now Governor Lingle) Made electric bikes illegal and what our new mayor ( who knows me) can do in promoting electric bicycles after she makes them legal on Maui.? Thus She would be setting enviromental transportation persidence on a island that MOST NEEDS THIS for many reasons. Mayor Imbaresment may accure 8)
First Electric Powered Paraglider For Sale?

Dell Schanze is offering an electric paramotor for sale. He claims it to have a flight time of 1.5 hours at cruise power, 145 pounds max thrust and a weight of about 80 pounds which includes batteries. If true, that would be impressive. Earlier conversations with Dell Schanze indicated that they were testing with Lithium Ion batteries as opposed to Lithium Polymer but we do not know what was included on this model.

The price is high as can be expected for any leading edge product, at $16,900 for the complete system with charger but then that's to be expected. It'll cost.

If true, this could portend a new chapter in the evolution of electric powered paragliding and powered paragliding in general.

As soon as we get more news, especially independent verification, we'll let you know.

Tonight our Mayor came to the "Save Honolua" meeting. I had a chance to talk with her before the meeting begin about getting electric bikes legal again. She did not know they were illlegal :lol: and agreed it is a no brainer to get ebikes back on the road and in the DMV books.Suprisingly she remembered my name after 8 years of not seeing her.. We also got 1 million from the county of Maui towards Honolua Bay funds to help keep open space and a coastal right of way. Now momentum on changing the ebike law will start.A non profit ebike rental with funds going towards a open space fund may be in order. :)
