police e-bike crackdown

The punishment was cheaper than the crime (propagating costs everyone especially the offender).
Agreed , although the fine was large there's a lot more to be paid by over-policing harmless e-bike riders , destroying the benefits of green transport , costing society much more in the long run than the "crime" of a missing speed limiter ever would .

Yeah , that makes you a few years older than me . It was the 45 years ago that got me , where did that go ?

What a mistake that was , having a new car parked in an area like that . The old joke used to be - What do you call a Mercedes driving in Koondoola ? . . . . . . . . . . Lost .

The Mitchell Freeway only went as far North as Osbourne Park in 81 , so the rule was after my time there . Balga was definitely up there when it came to crime , Girrawheen and Koondoola weren't as bad . The hot spots were , and probably still are , Balga , Armadale (close to where I live now) , Kwinana , Fremantle , Northbridge and Perth CBD .
I went over in the early eighties, my second trip, the first I was only 16 and got a job at a sand mine in enneabba. Those were the days, no one asked any questions. Second time I rode over and lived in Albany for 8 months then 4 or 5 in Perth. Vic Park, South Perth, Padbury and lastly North Beach. I was in construction, had a ball, at least up until I got married 🤮
Needless to say there was no police-e-bike-crackdown then, just to stay on topic :)

Well, it is finally starting to happen here. The local news reported today that one local county (Loudon in VA) is coming after e-bikers and scooters. The problem, of course, is mostly kids and teens riding and scooting in unsafe locations and ways…
No the problem is Karens getting pissed about people lane splitting & obvious having fun doing something they won’t do. If you’re going to put the puchcode through to delete the Euro 250watt restriction & have replaced the 48v system with a 60v system that one slightly under charges to get some 1300watts from my Eprodigy Magic pro, one just has to make sure they have a bike without a top tube so it nominally looks like a old fashioned womens bike, then put a basket on the front to make it look more domestic & one of these folding tub things ziptied down on the rear luggage rack & just have a bundle of spring onions or shallots sticking out the back & some token domestic looking things in the basket too.
this way one can fly around over taking those wankers in lycre on their dropbar bikes doing their fantasy pelaton shit causing grief holding up traffic & piss of car drivers caught in traffic by lane splitting to the front then running the lights. I do this with my Ipad in the back Blutoothing to a big speaker in the basket playing Radio Birdman, The Stooges & MC5. Don’t wear a poofy helmet either, because if one’s in a upright bike (one in which the bars are higher than the seat) & has a mirror attached to the bars, so one can see the traffic all around & get out of the way of cars coming up behind, it’s actually safer than wearing a helmet while be on a mirrorless dropbar bike with one’s bum way up in the air as one is looking at the front tyre roll over cracks on the road, as stats show in Europe. This means one can spot cops real quick & all of a sudden ride in a low profile domestic way.
We just need politicians get up & say words to the effect that:-

“every person on a ebike is one less car on the road meaning less traffic, sure Karens get pissed off with some of their antics, but the fact is life simply isn’t safe or fair, meaning some will be having fun doing things that Karens wouldn’t dare do & some will get injured occasionally, sometimes fatally, sometimes kids. This is absolutely normal & to be accepted as long as it doesn’t get out of hand - Gez in the Middle Ages royals would have to have like a dozen kids just for 2 to last long enough to be old enough to start their own families, so children dying is absolutely normal for our species. In fact for our species to continually evolve in a positive way we need regular Darwinian deaths amongst dumb & retard kids. Remember that movie set in the future where plants were fertilised with energy drink as retards inherited the planet. BTW as long as lithium battery fires are way under 1% there’s nothing to be concerned about. Sure the govt can cover it’s arse by putting signs up at railway stations saying that modified ebikes are banned from the network, but it’s just bullshit arse covering as the average railway worker just wouldn’t know the difference between a retail ebike & a modded one”

I would really love it if a politician got up & said words to this effect & he would definitely get my vote. Odds on if it did happen it probably be a bloke, maybe one day a woman would be tempted not to virtue signal if that’s the case she’s definitely be worth a poke. Hey my crass postry is turning into poetry.

A powered vehicle can do damage. The solution is to only permit responsible people access to powered machines and then hold them accountable for any damage they do. We already do this.

It's called a Driver's License. We already understand this, and we understand why. The only change needed is to require a Driver's License for any user of a powered vehicle (apart from the already-defined and already-regulated use of disability scooters). And then enforce the existing framework for licensed drivers.

We permit people to modify their petrol vehicles, and so we already have the laws and frameworks to deal with DIY electric vehicles. There is no objection there if you notice this and if we stop attempting to twist ourselves into permitting children (who by legal definition are not responsible) access to powered vehicles, then we have no problem with "modifications" or "DIY".

There is no sensible argument to be made for contorting ourselves into odd new schemes for approaching this. Powered vehicle requires responsible operator, a Driver's License specifically is about granting permission to a responsible operator, and we need only correct our laxities in current enforcement to make this work. It's already exactly what we want and need.

I don't see why supposedly intelligent adults continue to insist that children should be given powered vehicles. Children can't be relied on to behave properly so don't put them in situations where that is life and death, either for them or for others. Children also need to use their bodies to grow properly. Why is this even a question? For the same reasons we don't permit children to drive cars, we don't give them other powered vehicles until they are not children.

The only change needed then is to improve enforcement of adult drivers of any sort. If you want a class of DIY bikes permitted, get off your ass and get involved in putting through the laws and you'll get what you want that way, instead of twisting yourself around in weird ways to inexplicably insist that children should be permitted access to powered vechicles and insisting that everything should be changed so that they can and you should nevertheless have no restrictions on what you can do.

This is stupid..

Edit:
People don't like being told their choices are stupid, whether they are or are not. In this case, I wrote about the various sideways efforts to permit children actions which they are not ready to bear the consequences of, and the weird sideways efforts to somehow blame this on the technology while simultaneously attempting to also give carte blanc to adults do do as they wish under the same approach. Those efforts, to me, seem obviously contradictory so insisting on them simultaneously rather than addressing responsibility and who can be considered responsible does seem directly stupid to me.

Nothing about requiring a Driver's License in Public spaces prevents, say, permitting your children to use quad bikes to herd the sheep on your private ranch.
You’re a real full on Karen, I bet you love the helmets rules that decreased cycling rates 40% virtually overnight, mostly women worried about ending up with helmet hair, which ended up being worst for their fitness, even though stats in Europe show that a cyclist riding an upright commuter bike with a mirror on the bars meaning they can see traffic all round them, is actually safer than a rider with a helmet on a dropbar bike with their bum way up in the air & their head staring at they front tyre running over cracks on the road

btw to a large degree bicycle helmets just give a false sense of security. 1st polies think ’now we have a helmet law that problems done’ so they now have an excuse not to build proper bike lanes & instead just paint facsimiles of them on the side of the road with the doors of parked cars constzntly get in the way. So really helmet laws just exist so we can’t have proper bike safety, like in the Flanders, the Netherlands, Lower Saxony & Denmark where there are proper bike paths everywhere & people can instantly tell the Australian tourists as they’re the only ones wearing helmets. 2, bicycle helmets simply aren’t engineered to protect a cyclist who’s bowled over at high speed by a car, or even protect a cyclist that loses control from getting death wobbles going down a hill at speed. They’re only effective at relatively low speeds when a cyclist falls into a bush or something. Do note that both accident rates & hospitalisations have gone up in the professional racing Peloton since helmets were made compulsory in 2003 with a very noticeable statistical correlation even injust the decades before & after that date, again false sense of security.

I really wish Karens like you would simply mind your own business & stopped pushing your safety obsessions onto society. From the day bicycles were invented till the late 80’s cyclists all over the planet coped fine without helmets, to the extent that I bet the percentage of cyclists reaching retirement age is virtually indistinguishable from the percentage of non cyclists reaching retirement age & in reality is probably totally indistinguishable.

Sure wear a helmet if you want but stop forcing the rest of society to go along with your safety obsesion. I’ve been riding bicycles every day since I was riding them to school in the 70’s & am now in my 60’s & still don’t wear a helmet, yet no head injury from cycling. I don’t have to worry about the helmet laws as I’m on a drug trial of a particular medication which is considered community service, so as a incentive or something I can get up to $500 in fines canceled each month, simply by dropping in the fines to the front office of the hospital department doing the trial. Funny thing is it’s due to to a head injury damaging my pituitary gland giving me panhypopituitarism, which mean also hypoadrenalism, hypothyroidism, hypoganadism, hyposomatropism, etc ( the pituitary switches on most of the other hormone producing glands so lots of secondaries). I was assaulted & hit over the head with an iron bar a dozen times in what the police said was a case of mistaken identity. so are we going to make everyone that lives in iffy neighbourhoods wear helmets so when walking into their backyard from the back lane they don’t get mugged by someone that thinks their robbing the pot dealer next door or the Ice dealer behind me because all our back gates join the lane a nearly the same spot.

fact is life has never been either fair or safe & never will be, ontop of which it’s not even desirable to live in a world that’s fair & safe as it can only come with a full on nanny state of control. Hangon, anyone seen the new ASIO laws where any Australian can be picked up without any reason given, then locked up, barring any contact with lawyers or family so they don’t even know what happened to you & forcibly questioned without any right to silence; or the new NSW police phone laws where they can now take the phone of anyone they want without a warrant or giving a reason & it’s a crime to refuse to unlock the phones for them. All these things come due to the whole Nanny state Karens keep pushing for as they expect govts to solve all their problems. Traditionally in our species that what families were for. Even when a victim of theft or violence, up to a few hundred years ago, like before the industrial revolution, the normal procedure was ones extended family challenging the perp’s family for a resolution & if they have significantly higher status in the community, one would have to request one’s lord to help them in some traditional ways. It’s crazy the way people look to the govt to do things for them & go reporting to the police over some pathetic nothing someone else did. Anyone who goes bringing the govt or the police involved in ones homelife is crazy. Every single person I know that’s gotten police involved in what was just a pathetic petty neighbourhood or domestic dispute or due to some virtually harmless agro at work or at a pub has without failure regretted it due to legal costs, days off work going to court & other complications, even just as a witness. Sure help someone out when something happens in you vicinity, but always piss off when police turn up, police & govt just isn’t worth the aggregation & when Karens like you demand constantly more govt interference we just end up with the nanny state we have. Ending up with a govt that gives our gas away at literally 1/30 of the price both Qatar & Norway get, so all our resource ministers for the last 40 years can instantly get highly paid consultancy jobs in the resources or mining sectors when they retire from politics, when we could have guranteed our car industry simply by banning any cars from being sold here unless they were LPG compatible. The same trick that worked for Brazil when any cars not e85 comptible were banned from their market. The same crooked toad polies of the establishment parties here also sanctioned the fuk out of Russia even though they've done everything possible to make sure they’ve been less civilian deaths in the Ukrainian war than any other multiyear war over the last 85 years or something across the entire planet. Gez the US, with our gutless toad polies getting Australia involved, killed more civilians in the 1st month of each of both their 2 wars with Iraq than the number of civilians that died in Ukraine over the whole of 22. Which is none of our business, yet the gutless polies of the west make sure that Ukraine gets stuck longer than otherwise in a war they can’t win by doing all they can to drag out the war as long as possible, all while the ignorant masses of the west are conned by a mainstream media propaganda narrative that would make Goebbels proud. Yet our politicians refuse to sanction Israel even though their genocidal campaign has killed more children than all the other wars & violent conflicts of the 21st century, combined (ironically including Ukraine), plus in just a couple of years they’ve kill more journos than died due to both WWI & WWII, combined & these are the politicians you want to drag more ‘n more into our lives with your demands for more ‘n more nannystatism as legislation accumulates at greater rates every year. I read somewhere that together the federal govt, the states & territories all together had 40 books of statutes for most of the 20th century, but since the late 70’s the’ve been snowballing out of control to nearly a 1000 now. I really believe instead Australia & virtually everyone inside it, well except lawyers, would’ve been better off if somewhere between 1975 & 1980 we had a constitutional referendum bringing in a US style Bill of Rights & limit of no more parliamentary legislation unless the new legislation replaced old legislation.

Sorry for the rant folks but it really peaved me that none of these Karens understand that trying to drag more govt interference in our lives in their obsessions about fairness & safety is definitely far from desirable due to the continued consequences of giving our stupid toad polies more avenues to destroy our lives. Look how the annual increase in booze taxes & regulatory fees has totally killed our pub culture & turned out pubs purely into poker machine shooting galleries for poker machine addicts, when back in the 80’s even people on the dole could afford to have a few beers the pub every day & in the 60’s draught beer at the pub was cheaper than bottle beer to go. Yet istead our polies give our gas away at literally 1/30 the price that both Qatar & Norway get. Mainstream polies saying we can’t change stakeholder contracts unilaterally is BS. All the federal govt needs to do is bring in a federal export tariff on gas & no contracts need changing. In fact before income taxes became a thing internationally around WWII export tariffs were nearly as common as import taxes internationally. Of course that’s because targeted smart taxes always make more sense than dumb income taxes

Also the annual rate of children dying on ebikes these days is no higher than it has traditionally been for children dying on bicycles in Oz for many years at just under 50 a year. Quite acceptable on a continent with nearly 30 million for a species in which childhood deaths were completely normal for virtually all our natural history.

There's a debate to be had. It just shouldn't reference the fact that fit cyclists exceed 25km/h.

They're not the people who are going to flatten pedestrians and head on other cyclists - they're alert, safety conscious, maintain their bicycles, and have thousands of hours experience.

It's novices, teenagers, and mentally impaired (AKA drug frocked) people who pose the danger. Nobody in their right mind would want to share the roads and paths with them on heavy electric motorcycles with barely functioning brakes, hence the 25km/h regulations.
Out of every cyclist I known, none have has ever hit a pedestrian, whether a normal bike or an ebike, bicycles hitting pedestrians are a rare thing, such a rare thing it’s not even worth worrying about. No more than worrying about normal people in cars not wearing helmets after noticing that car racers on telly wear helmets & therefore think driving cars are unsafe unless they wear helmets too

We don't do name calling here of each other so knock it off.
OK no worries, sorry about that. I was a bit full on this morning, by this continued non stop whinge of people getting pissed off at other people simply those people are having fun & they arn’t, & instead those people having fun are either getting away with loopholes in the law or getting away with infringing on laws & regulations that in reality are either victimless, too petty to worry about or the consequences of what they’re getting away are at this moment too statistically insignificant to worry about yet. Also the trend of modern people getting obsessively more & more demanding of govt intrusion g & over reach, which always starts with more demands for more safety & fairness. Giving toxic toads in govt more ways to fuk with us while the establishment just keeps getting more power & taking more ‘n more. You know the US was at it’s most egalitarian during the 50’s ‘n 60’s up to around 73, a period when ordinary working class & middle class Americans were way better off relative to the rich than they are now & a single income family could buy house on say a ten year mortgage with a slightest of dent to their budget, even though the wealthy were paying way higher tax rates percentage wise than they do now. It’s like in Ukraine during their conflict, where the top 10% have got significantly wealthier, while the bottom 70% are way poorer now than before their conflict.

Instead people are getting upset because some other people are have fun & finding loopholes in laws or getting away with infringing on laws that are petty, victimless or too statistically insignificant to warrant attention. It really is simply a media beatup plus a Karen effect & we’d all be better off if such people simply minded their own business & just worried about their own hassles like mortgage payments, the odds on their wives pissing off on them, living in the only country in the OECD that has less than half the paid vacation leave of all the others & the only country in the OECD where it’s completely normal to go bankrupt due to medical debt. These issues are way more important for these people obsessing on the non issue of something relatively new in society that they’re not a part of, so pissing them off. When they would be way better off doing some constructive things so the US no longer has the most expensive healthcare system in the world, both per capita & as a percentage of GDP, while having outcomes in regards life expectancies worse than embargoed poor Cuba. plus of course proper living wages for everyone & no longer having a minimum wage half that of Australia’s, & that’s after exchange rates are taken into account. Plus wouldn’t it be good if all working Americans got at least a months paid vacation leave so they could go on regular overseas holidays like people do in the rest of the Western World. Maybe this media beatup to give the Karens a whinge (I mean average Karens on the street now Rather than anyone on this board) is so the people angry with their lot will get distracted with the non-issue of ebikes, instead of changing their society for the better. You know every driver is better off with less cars on the road due to ebikes.

Pedestrians around my way are still the same as they've always been , mainly unpredictable . What I call professional walkers will walk on the left side of the path (right hand drive country) and if there's two or more they'll all stay to the left . What I call Sunday afternoon walkers (it could be any day of the week) will walk where ever they feel like , looking at their phones , oblivious to everything around them . They'll do all sorts of things , move from one side of the path to the other for no reason , turn around , stop , fling an arm up , walk four abreast . Regardless , I've never hit anyone , not even close and most of the Sunday walkers even say sorry when I pass them . It would be a rarity that I come across one of these :-1787551423828.png

The biggest problem here is kids getting given $3 to $4k 'ebikes' without pedals driving 45mph down the middle of roads without ANY knowledge of traffic laws whatsoever because they are UNDER 14 YEARS OLD!!!

(And obviously suffer from a genetic mental difficiency inherited from their enabler parents)

I'm sorry to you anarchists, but a bare minimum of knowledge and responsibility should be LEGALLY present before allowing anyone the position of driving where they could possibly kill MY loved ones.

Those aren't ebikes by legal definition, they're unlicensed/unregistered motorcycles intended only for off road

If an adult contributes to the delinquency of a minor ( for example, buying them a surron with no care for the law ), we have a law against that.
It's already illegal to ride a motorcycle and often a moped class vehicle without plates on the street.
It's already illegal to ride a motorcycle on pedestrian infrastructure.
Reckless operation of a vehicle is already illegal.
It's illegal to import items which are illegal in any given state already.
It's illegal to hit pedestrians in a vehicle.
it's illegal to go above the speed limit.

Multiple permutations of these laws are broken by the hypothetical teen on a surron. The problem is not that you don't have enough laws or regulations, it's that the US govt generally doesn't care to enforce them, or their current means are not effective.

Notice that the solution is always to either ban or license and register ebikes, and sometimes also add other encumbrances to adoption. It's never to just enforce existing laws.
In this case we are punishing one kind of vehicle for the sins of another..... why?

Here's something else that's interesting.
In the USA, cars kill increasing numbers of people per year and are licensed, regulated, and taxed vehicles.

Notice that you never hear anyone in the media talking about how we should regulate cars to improve pedestrian's safety, as they've done in Europe.
Almost nobody cares to bring up that slightly modifying the shape of the vehicle ends up in some decent % of injuries and deaths avoided, which is nearly free to implement.
But you often hear that 2 wheeled electric vehicles are a bane to pedestrian's existence and must be regulated.
And ebikes/emotos kill a fraction of the people per year.

A registration scheme wouldn't change physics or accountability, so if a government allows any kind of vehicle to be used, some number of people are going to die and/or get injured.

What it doesn't change is the lack of enforcement of existing laws. Registration doesn't change whether an individual is subject to existing laws or not. So registration is effectively a tax on ownership.

If you would like to see ownership tax on small efficient electric vehicles, you should make friends with some oil lobbyists. They'd love to hear your idea. Don't forget looping in the Karens because they'd love a slice of the action too.

On the opposing side would be environmentalists, commuters, people who need assistive devices, the economically disadvantaged, and people who ride 2 wheeled vehicles for fun.

You have to treat pedestrians as random unpredictable hazards. Especially when they are glued to their phones. If you want to ride at 45 km/hr, take your chances on the road.

Yes, but there is No law stating minimum requirements to drive ebikes on the streets whatsoever where I live. No requirement to know the traffic laws, yet they drive in traffic. THERE IS laws concerning all OTHER vehicles that travel in traffic. Not saying they should over regulate, just ensure people driving in traffic know the rules of the road. If they don't have a proper driver's license, just require a passing course.

Far too reasonable a solution for government to adopt! 😂

Because you don't organise with your fellow citizens and elect people who will keep their oaths. The oath covers enforcing the law, and not taking bribes, etc.

There isn't anyone but the citizens (YOU) to do this. Superman is not coming.

The freedom provided by Democracy requires the active participation of the citizens in enforcing the Democracy - you must organize, discuss, persuade, reach majority and enforce your will by voting. It's quite messy. It is VERY messy. But it offers a path not otherwise available.

All that discussing and organizing means work by adults, and openness to talking with each other, and listening. And then it requires unflinching insistence on people keeping their word - such as their oath of office or their signature on their Driver's License (which is a legal document you make a pledge on). And this requires that you keep your own word - otherwise you can't require it of others.

But it won't happen any other way. This is the price. There is no 'set and forget' about it. But you are quite capable of it - just take responsibility for your own actions.

I'm not sure if you're insinuating that I ride at 45 km/h on pathways with pedestrian traffic or not . If you are you may want to re-read what I said , including the part where many pedestrians say sorry once they realize that they were in the wrong . I've never come close to hitting a pedestrian , how ? Easy , I ride to the conditions and give everyone on foot the right of way . Pedestrian behavior hasn't changed very much in all the years I've been riding , the only difference is phones and earbuds which make them blind and deaf .

The only time I ride close to 45km/h on a pathway is on long straight uninterrupted stretches with zero , or next to zero , traffic . My bikes don't have throttles and are torque sensing pedal assist , I can even ride them without the motor turned on .

If he had lived this long, he would have changed his opinion.

Democracy must include some measure of competency testing. Not race testing, like before, but actual disqualification of those who are resistant to facts.

My suggestion is that one can have a car, a child, a church, or a vote. The car demonstrates that the collective interest does not matter to you at all. The child collapses your interest into that of the child. The church demonstrates that you are resistant to any kind of rational process. Those who eschew all of the above may weigh in on policy.

Sorry I wasn't insinuating that you do that.
I was just making the point that riding fast around pedestrians, whether on an ebike or a pedal bike is a bad idea, mainly because of the behaviour of pedestrians. Which is getting worse because of phones. In my opinion.

Same here. When on a trail, i slow down a lot and since i have a throttle, it's easy to cut the motor and continue with pedal power as soon as i see a pedestrian, so i can pass at below 20mph / 32kph.

Our here in the suburbs in an area where the weather is unfavorable most of the time, paths are never full of people. If there happen to be people around, i'm usually pedaling and blipping the throttle here and there and i'm averaging maybe 15mph tops.

Occasionally you'll see a horse on these trails and the right speed to pass is 5mph or less, horses spook easier than humans 🤠

Totally agree with you on everything you've said . Yeah , horses , they're not good with the sound an e-bike makes .

Once I get away from the lake loop path , the pathways and trails in my area are similar to what you described , deserted .
