I'm with Dogman. The batteries wear down with time, so, unless it's fairly new, it could be that the battery needs replacing. However, you can get the same symptoms when the battery contacts don't make a good connection - especially if it's the type where the battery slides or drops onto a couple of pins. The little spring-loaded female contacts can get bent or corroded, both of which cause a bad contact. If they get bent, you have to bend them back, which requires a bit of dismantling to remove them because they're not easy to bend back from the outside of the battery. if they're corroded, that's a bit easier to deal with- just clean them.
