I'm thinking of building a lightweight folding ebike and was wondering what the difference is between the cute q85 and q100 motors is, or if its just dimensional. I'm looking to do a front hubmotor in either a 24V or 36V setup, depending on the RPM of the motor I go with. Thanks for your help!

In a nutshell, mostly dimensional and application.
The Q85 is only available as a front mount and weighs around 2 Kg.
The Q100 is available front and rear and is slightly larger and heavier motor.
In general, greater mass equates into a greater power-handling capability.
The Q85 was available before the Q100 and there are afew Q85 builds documented here,
but recently, the Q100 seems to be perfered. Even at 3 Kg., the Q100 is still a very tiny motor.

Note, ck. out the last page of the "List of Geared Motors" sticky at the top of the E-bike General page.

A friend has a Q100 24V kit running on 6S lipo, and he has happy with it. The controller is shunt modded to put out about 500W. The wires get fairly warm like this, but he has a few thousand WOT miles on it without any problems.

It's the higher RPM version, and does 22+ MPH on flat ground, looses quite a bit of speed up hills, but climbs OK for 500W. I wouldn't run much more than 500W into it, since you will tend to ride WOT most of the time. The motor is barely larger than the rear gearset. It's tiny.

Thanks guys, very helpful. I think the Q85 should work just fine for me now as a front hubmotor in a 20" folding bike.

You have rim brakes, right?.
I don't see a disc brk. kit for the Q85.
