Maybe better to spray protective coating on the windings as I don't think a filter would be a good trade off in efficiency vs protection....

What i meant was filter on the back on the cover - inside, just to eliminate the water and dust going in thru the cover. little stone clip could also get inside from the small holes.
but then if filter is in high density, it will also block air going inside to cool the windings. not sure.
I am then thinking if it is possible to mount a fan (those EDF fan) on the swing arm to blow air to the motor from outside?
 
I don't ride the bike in the rain so I'm not too concerned about that stuff.

But if I did ride in the rain I wouldn't be concerned. People go through rivers with these hub motors drilled open, filling the hub with water and it doesn't matter.

The way I figure is motors are pretty cheap now especially with people ordering direct from the factory and after a few years you're probably going to upgrade anyway. But it is doubtful that dirt and stuff like that will really make that much of a difference, and you can always pop out the stator and clean it all up.

To make this custom cooling mod, it took me many failed attempts and I had to pop out the stator about 6 times in total. Not a big deal once you know how to do it properly.

I also used triple sealed nachi bearings, these are really good quality and dirt cheap also for a Japan made bearing. Supposedly Nachi are the best now that SKS outsources their bearings.

Hi guys, just wondering if any of you guys have tried to waterproof you raptor frame. My main issue is not so much when i'm out riding in the wet it's when I cleaning it down. I'm very considerate with the jet washer but inevitably water gets in where the side panels meet the frame. I could silicon one side up as I access from the same side all the time, but that's a bit permanent.
I've thought about making some thin silicon rubber gaskets to fit between the ali panels and frame... :idea:

Anybody got any ideas? I'm sure it's not just a Raptor thing, all the frames with this arrangement must suffer to one extent or another.

Hey Jon,

I think silicon on one side side cover and just some electrical tape on the other when it comes time to hose it off should work quite well.

For making a gasket how about a bead of silastic on the frame or the cover, wax and/or tape the frame/sidecover where you don't want the silicon to stick, attach the side cover and tighten the screws 90% of the way. Wait for the silicon to set and it should form a pretty decent gasket.
 
Hey Brian, I'd actually thought of waxing up one surface then silicon the other to join them. You have a point about taping up! !! My lad gets his Raptor for Xmas & has designed his graphic for the side plates.. at the same time I can cut some vinyl overlays so the silicon never touches the frame or cover panel, so never have to clean it off the paint. Think I'll wax up the frame vinyl overlay so the gasket silicon sticks to the cover plate vinyl! I'll puts some pics on my rapy thread if anybody is interested.

Then Wales can throw as much rain & mud at us as it can!! Fingers crossed.. :wink:
 
Just had a crazy idea. I need a long range e-bike to travel into manhattan, have some fun, then travel back home to Staten island.
I was thinking about hooking up a charger port to use an electric car charger but don't want to wait around to charge.

I am thinking about using 320 3500MAH 18650 cells into a raptor 140 frame. Would be a 20s16P pack.

From my calculations this would be a 4,032 watt hour pack. (3.6 nominal voltage * 3.5 amp hours) (320) = 4032
Have a continuous amp rating of about 160 amps, which I will never go above 100 anyway. I guess I could even use less dense cells to save on weight if they existed.

This pack would weigh about 34 lbs. The crazy part is my current 6s packs of Turnigy batteries weighs 35lbs in my raptor but I only have 2,331 rated watt hours, which probably only have about 1800 watt hours left after 3 years.

I'm thinking this would be a great way to explore Manhattan and then drive back home. 4,032 watt hours would offer lots of range. My current pack of 2,331 watt hours wasn't really worth the ride into Manhattan.
 
Thats a lot o energy storage, but yah, very doable. Taking it easy pedal assisting, you could potentially have about a 175mile range.

Unfortunately no joke...

Not sure on the Rappy. I was able to ride it back with one arm so it runs. Front rotor sounds bent but haven't checked out anything else yet.

Had to get wife to pick spines out of my %}*^? Before going to hospital. Landed in a cactus. I can't make this crap up! Lol...
 
Hard to tell from angle but I hit a small bunny hop faster than I normally do and landed to far forward to make the turn, then grabbed too much front and washed out. I might have been able to make it if I slid the rear around and tried for the corner anyway but fear of the cedar branches skewering me won over quick thinking. Bottom line, I goofed up with entry speed over the bump and then not committing to the turn.

These things are basically dirt bikes and I probably need to learn some basic skill sets of that and mountain biking, neither of which I have done before getting into eBikes. Motorcycle road course racing helps but slipping and sliding around on the dirt is still pretty new to me.

Lol... Sometimes the crash video is the only silver lining to be had, so yes! GoPro it. I have more footage of other crashes but I am pacing my online embarrassment 1) one for my own pride and 2) so I can keep providing entertainment for those of us going through winter right now. After that is exhausted, it will be up to the Southern Hemisphere guys to keep us entertained!

Speaking of winter entertainment, I have ordered a LightningRods Mid-Drive to convert my black Raptor over to. Hub motor will go to the Flux Alpha. I am excited to see how the LR Kit with 5000w compares to the 6000w I have been running with the Cromotor in a 17" wheel. I need to order a 19x1.6 wheel to build up for the Mid-Drive but I am waiting for LR to sort out a stronger rear hub with 6 speed. He has a line on a custom builder that he talks more about in the LR thread. CheekyBloke also has a pretty cool custom rear hub where he fabricated 3 single speed cogs together. I'll update you guys as things progress.

Hopefully I will be healed up enough to start conversion when the parts come in (and of course healed up enough to keep working to pay for it!).

We are human and make mistakes. I have seen pros do it, so ebike amateurs like us, the probability is higher. Some would blame the bike, tires, or brakes, but you were honest. Respect that alot. Thanks or taking the time to explain what happened, if just one person can learn from a mistake without making it themselves, its worth it. Get well quick, sounds like you got some neat shit coming down the pipe.

This is a bit off topic but speaking of learning, maybe we could arrange for a gathering sometime next summer. When I used to be more heavily into sport bikes, the Yamaha R1 forum guys would get together at Deals Gap, North Carolina to ride the "Tail of the Dragon" for a week. I never made it up there but it was good social and technical event from what I hear. Maybe we could do something like that by country/region and maybe get some vendors out there too. I think something in your neck of the woods would be pretty cool Rix (though a bit of a drive for east coast guys). I suppose it would appeal more to OffRoad guys or maybe we could do an event where there are both on road and off road riding options in the area. I'll search for a thread and post up a new one if it doesn't exist.

Edit: I didn't find a thread about a North American capital nice toon so I posted a new thread to gauge interest.

Glad the bike is okay....just kidding. Real bummer about your shoulder. Your not fully out of the game. You can still ride with one hand albeit slow :). Get well.

Yeah, I rode back home with one hand and a dangling arm. I really really don't recommend it.
 
Yeah, must have been painful riding back. I can think of at least 3 situations where person I was with dislocated their shoulder and had to help them back.
