Hey guys,

So I'm trying to remove my drive side crank arm on my BBSHD so I can install a smaller chainring...problem is it's stuck on the square taper and WON"T BUDGE.

I have tried a soft mallet and prying it off with screw drivers using equal force.
Have not tried heat yet.

Kind of a design flaw IMO.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried this common crank-arm tool?

I just ordered this before I saw your post.

It should work the same, no?
I have never worked on this square crank stuff, I probably should have researched a bit more before posting but I was fired up.

Thanks.

I've been pretty happy with the few Park Tools I have bought. I have a cheap crank puller from a really cheap tool set that comes apart every time I use it. Gets the job done but I always have to be careful not to destroy the nice cranks or spindle I'm using it on.

As a general rule when working on bikes it shouldn't be that hard. If you find yourself reaching for a prying tool and or hammer then there is probably a tool for that operation that you just don't have.

I recently machined a tool to remove a dicta 4 key freewheel. An hour of machining later I got home and found that I already owned the proper 4 prong tool for it. Bought an ACS freewheel this week and discovered that it takes a 6 tooth remover tool that costs more than the freewheel. Seems like no matter how many bike tools you have there is always one more that you need.

You sound like you're used to modern 2 piece crank where you just loosen a couple of bolts and it slides apart. On 3 piece crank with square taper, it's jammed on there good! You will need a puller as stated already...And be careful for crossthreading starting the threaded part in, and tighten it in more than hand tight if the crank is on there hard, or the threads can rip out of the crank. That leads to sawing things, so you don't want that....

It's not so much a design flaw as just being more primitive than 2 piece crank.... And the motor being there makes 2 piece tougher to do.
