Replacement forks question

The bike I'm converting has damaged forks and I thought I'd replace them. The ones I grabbed from a parts bike have a different length stem (longer) so the threads stop too soon. I could always thread more of the stem but would also like to investigate steel replacements. Does anyone know of any online sources? It's a MB with 26" wheels.

Also I'm pretty sure the thread is 1" * 24 TPI but I don't know the thread form. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

1 x 24tpi is the standard and it is just the regular 60degree thread. nothing fancy.

almost any bike shop that does repairs will have the correct size die to cut these threads. this is actually quite a common repair, with the wide range of head tube lengths many forks are not threaded down far enough.

I thought they stopped making threaded headsets for mountain bikes about 8 years ago?

yeah i'm with mark - it was my understanding that a 1" threadless headset was for cheap bikes becasue some old bikes had 1" threaded. Most new bikes use a 1 1/8" or "an inch and a tad" as my local bike guy says.

you'll get a much higher quality fork if you move to a frame that supports 1 1/8". This is why i found it soo hard to find a good frame. Modern frames *mostly* use alloys, and not steel. steel frames with 1" headsets are easy to get, 1 1/8" are much harder (or just plain expensive).

good luck :)

Thanks for the help. This is a 17 year-old Fuji that's had a rough life. I may look for a different bike but this one is pretty comfortable.
