Replacing G311 with G020

So on my wife’s bike I have installed a g311, Baserunner, and Cycle Analyst from Grin. The motor recently started screaming like a banshee, I think it overheated. I want to replace it with a G020, which I think will be slightly more robust. Can I keep the CA and Baserunner and just use a new G020 hub, or will I need to find a pinout of the 2 cables and cut & solder?

Rewiring is probably needed. I think the ebikes.ca phaserunner has an auto-learn function for halls and phases, but if the black and red lines for the hall aren't connected correctly, you're going to have a bad time.

g020 is a pretty powerful motor.

Don't these Bafang motors both use the same 9 pin Z910 plug? That would be three phase wires, three Hall sensor wire wires, Two 5V power/ground plus speed sensor to make the nine, All manufacturers should be following the same pin-out on this plug,

They would work as-is on any standard controller, but I understand that Grin piggy backed a temperature sensor onto the speed sensor in their G311 kits. Their signal has both a pulse component for speed data as well as DC levels from the thermister. You probably have to program the Cycle Analyst for a regular speed sensor with a G020.

I believe the G020 is the old Bafang SW0X2. I use a front drive version on one of my ebikes. The gear whine resonates thru my forks/bars. Eveyone hears it coming, or I think they do,

Was the kit setup for thermal rollback? It should have cutoff power before permanent damage. If it really is a heat issue, you should make sure to set up the system with new motor so it protects itself.

I’m not even sure if it was setup for thermal rollback. I bought it as a CA kit from Grin, everything seemed to be set up well, but I’m not even sure about that detail.

I’d guess that if Grin set it up, they would have implemented it, since they put a temp sensor in the motor and the hardware supports that protection. I guess the question is, is the noise a reason to upgrade, or an excuse to upgrade? In other words, if you solved the noise issue, would that be an acceptable solution? Have you tried reseating the motor connector? A poor phase wire connection can produce some ugly noises.

Yes I checked. It’s not the wire connection. Also it keeps getting worse, it only works up to about half power and makes a rattling grinding noise. The noise wouldn’t bother me too much but it’s currently not suitable to go out for a ride. I’m almost certain the gears are chewed out or melted. Then again I’m no expert so I appreciate any input. I already ordered a Bafang G020 kit on Amazon. I’m jumping off the Grin bandwagon, anyone interested in a used-for-one-year Baserunner and Cycle Analyst?
