RPM Sensor on Brushless Motor...No Cogging?

Hello awesome diy people!

I am loving my electric skateboard. However, because the motor is unsensored (as most are) I can't power the board until I've pushed off. Otherwise, it cogs. Putting a hall sensor on the motor would fix the issues (effectively turning the motor into a sensored motor), but it requires some wiring and soldering know how (which I know little). I've found and RPM sensor which measures the RPM of the motor and sends the data to the ESC I'm wondering if this will fix the issues of cogging as the ESC will recognize the motor's motion. Would this work?

Here is a link to the RPM sensor I'm looking at:

Thanks

You can do a few things. Moving to higher voltage and a higher gearing with a tiny push seem to fix the cogging.

If you wanted a real solution there are a few available.

1. You can add hall sensors - this kit here seems to work well - e0designs.com/products/hall-effect-sensor-board/
You will need an esc which can accept sensored as an option.

2. You can use Ben's VESC which is pretty awesome for unsensored motors.

That rpm sensor will not work because it measures rpm by looking at the voltage between two phases of the motor. Basically the device you linked depends on the controller operating, so going the other way will not work.
