now here's my modified GNG:

so DEFLECTION is 0.0746875 or about 1.9mm (using a force of 1 to 2 pounds)

is this a good rule of thumb?
 
Sounds about right. Too tight and unloaded friction and bearing wear gets worse, too loose and it will slip/skip/ratchet under max loads...leading to rapid tooth wear.
