I'm planning on building my own electric bike, using a magic pie 4 and some 48v bottle battery or possibly a larger one if necessary.

I live in an appartment building with a some more appartments in it, this is the only place where I can charge the battery except at work. Is it safe? I read about someone who charged it inside their oven(!) to avoid the risk of burning down their house. Should I be worried?

I read that having a BMS in your battery pack is an important safety step, but I also read that the quality of BMSs vary a lot, how do I know which ones are good? I've been looking at this one: https://bmsbattery.com/ebike-battery/701-48v116ah-bottle-09-panasonic-battery-torque-sensor-battery.html but eventhough the store is called "bms battery", the battery seems to be lacking a bms, right?

All the battery packs sold on BMSbattery have BMSes in them you don't have to worry about that.
The pack you listed uses 18650 cells which are by far the safest cells you can buy. They are all contained in little steel cans.
I have some 18650 cells thave have been run over by a forklift and they are quite deformed but still continue to work.

The packs that are more of a fire risk are pouch cell packs, most notably 'lipo' packs.

18650 cells are used in most laptops so there are quite literally 100s of millions of them sitting in homes being left to charge with no attendance with out issue, if they can cause a fire there's plenty of lawyers waiting in line/dreaming of suing Dell, HP etc but of course they can't.
The pack you have listed using 18650s is as safe as it gets for charging in an apartment.

Yes, that type of battery is safe to charge indoors. Don't lose sleep over that type of battery. RC drone batteries are the dangerous ones.

However, do take some common sense precautions. Don't set the charger on a pile of old newspapers, or pick a location just under the drapes, sitting on the carpet, etc. Just like you wouldn't put your toaster in a highly flammable spot in your house.

Store and charge the battery in a less flammable place than sitting on the most easily lighted place in the house. On a less cluttered table is fine, better still on a large tile. There is still a remote possibility that the battery could get hot if a short circuit of some kind happens. So a wood table better than a couch cushion or the carpet, sitting on a tile counter top better than a wood table, and so on.

Thank you very much for your good answers, I'll look for a good charging spot around the appartment :)

I always have a fresh fire detector near my charging spot, and if ya feel like gettin a bit freaky get a cheap fire blanket. :D
