Small detail: Ypedal's bike started as a bike and other than the electric bits, is still a bike. Safe's bike never was and never will be.

"small detail" hahaa thats ripe all you have done is rag on safe for not having pedals..Does Ypedals ride have pedals?

Eh...I'm pretty sure at least ONE of them does. It's hard to keep track of all the ones he has. :p

IMO, it's a bike if you can show it to 100 people and most or all of them think "bike". Don't think Safe's would pass that test...

Here's my totally uneducated opinion of Safe's ride (since you all want to know my opinion, I'm sure  )

I like his "bike" (#001 as he has designated it). I think he has done a fine job of building it and debugging it, for the most part. I would, however, designate it as a light motorcycle, though, not a bicycle. My personal reasons for that are;

#1 No pedals (hmm, I think a few others have pointed that out)

#2 No bicycle pedegree (it never was a bicycle to begin with). I do understand you can build a bicycle from scratch. But that would include pedals. It is not like someone can look at it and say "That was once a "X" brand bike, I can tell......"

#3 Though light for a motorcycle, it is (IMHO) too heavy to be truely a bicycle. (A small beef, admittedly, though)

#4 It has more motorcycle traits tahn bicycle traits, I.E. bar end weights, rearsets, low clip-ons, road racer style seat, etc.

That being said, as a light motorcycle, I think he did a fine job! He would, of course, need to install lights and what-not to make it licenseable as a motorcycle, though.

Now, with all that hot air I just spewed, I have to say this, if I lived in a state that allowed bikes like that, I would be riding a pedal-less bike as well (along with a few pedal bikes in the stable). So, I cannot blame him for building and riding it.

I do think he should relax with the "Its a bicycle" thing as well as assmuing everyone would want a E-road racer and just ride, have fun, and let us know if he discovers something that can benefit the rest of us.

Whew, sorry for the long winded post!

Totally agree on that... Personally i wouldn't classify it as a bicycle either, and i think everyone knows my view on it being a "road racer" and it being popular. As for whether a bicycle starts out as a bicycle and has its pedals removed i personally don't see how it makes ANY difference..end result no pedals and not legal (in most states...in safes state of Missouri hes lucky he can get away legally without pedals) ...my point is safe is the only one that gets hammered by a handful of members over a ride without pedals and its getting old and I'm new to this forum...reading back through old threads this has been going on for ever :-| . Like him or loath him i dont think he deserves the treatment certain members here seem to think its their duty to give, im a moderator on 2 other forums if this went on their you wouldnt be members for long... just my two cents.

I was referring to his latest http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6207&p=94064#p94064 and an instant favourite of mine being a 'chopper' type cycle :)

:)

Oh boy.. since we are all sharing tonight.. and i just cracked open a fresh beer ( one more day of vacation left.. doh.. )

About safe's rig, in my opinion, not a bicycle, an EV ( Electric Vehicle ). Nothing wrong with that, and i don't think you can find a post of mine that rags on that matter. My chopper is just about the same class of machine, an EV.

It's a mental infusion think for me, but " motorcycle " brings to the brain " Gasoline ".. these machines are a different animal.

About moderation, well, mostly adults on this forum ( would really wonder at times ) but it's no kindergarden, as moderator my main role is to delete " spam" , move things to the right section of the forum, lock threads when they just go too far.. unless it really makes me cringe ( and after working 12 years in tech support.. it takes alot to make me cringe ) you should remain accountable for what you write. I rarely delete anything, and both Tyler and Safe have had threads deleted on rare occasions ( i'm moody some days but still got " some " ethics ) . anyways.. i'm rambling.. long story short. until banned ( requires reallllly pissing me off ) we all have the right to speak our mind.

Oh, and yes, one of my ebikes is really an " Ebike " .. eZee rig, 30 km/h, 500w, 26" wheels and lithium.. i do pedal once in a while. The other bikes range from " EV " to " Overpowered " to " not yet converted "

Good call. Safe has pretty much been good to me and I have no personal beef with him at all. I also like TD. He has given me great advice.

Bottom line----------- Everyone has an ego and brags a bit once in a while. That is human nature. As with Ausie, I am new here. I joined right when the grand Safe bashing really hit a fever pitch. It is getting old. But, all in all, eveyone seems to be relating pretty well with each other on this board.

I still rely heavily on you guys for advice from time to time and I answer alot of questions myself. That is what makes this forum work well.

Anyway, I keep up with Safe's builds. They are cool.

I do think (at least project #001) should be in the E-motorcycle section, though).

BIG ditto ;)

I like reading safe's posts and I got nothing against him neithers. Same with TD and pretty much everybody else here's posts. I think safe's bike, whatever category you put it in, is neato. Oh and anybody who shows us how much utility you can get out of a $50 bike (TD) and anyone who can show us how to squeeze high performance out of low tech bats (safe) is cool in my book.. Anyway, 12mph kid utility bikes and 50mph 1000 manhour sporty bikes aren't for everybody, thats for sure.. But so what, the fringe builds are the ones giving us readers out here on teh interwebs ideas on what is possible, not the plain vanilla builds.

..... plain vanilla builds.

HEH  Did you mean that to be a sort of double entendre?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like Safe's actual 'build' posts, and his project #2 was one of my earliest inspirations here.

But I HATE graphs....
I had an Economics professor once who had (in his own little 1960s dope-smoking, commie-hippie world, anyway) reduced the entire macro-economic system into a group of seven very complex graphs. The final exam was merely a few dozen unlabeled lines on paper, each followed by :
"Describe, in precisely 200 words the exact meaning of this line"

I flunked. Left that course understanding less than I did going in. Hated graphs ever since.

Fortunately my next Econ Prof was superb. Not one dang graph in the next four semesters of grad level econ. I actually ended up enjoying that stuff.

Why bag on safe? Cuz he's full of shit, that's why.

Bluto asked the same thing in the Xyster thread...

Funny you should use that phraseology... it's precisely that safe never uses the former, and always uses the latter.

Literal or Fashionable?

I've researched the original greek meaning of the word "bicycle" and all it really means is "two wheels".

History shows us that in the beginning the only criteria for a bicycle was that it had two wheels... the advancements that came later that added things like chains were not part of the original defintion and really there's nothing in the word "bicycle" that even refers to a chain.

In German (the language) they have this habit of combining words together to make bigger words, so maybe what we need is something like:

"ChainPedalBicycle"

or

"BicyclePedalChain"

...there is an actual word for pure pedal powered vehicles (or hybrids) and it's "pedelac". My #001 is not a "pedelac", but it is a "bicycle" because it has two wheels and a micro sized motor so that it's clearly not a motorcycle.

But not to worry... I've made it clear my aspirations are to migrate towards bicycle "purity" and the Federal Law. So as time goes forward there will be less and less to complain about with the newer machines and they will be even more cool looking because of all the fairings and stuff. :)

Here's the seat fairing (upside down) as I fill in on the inside... talk is cheap, I actually put in hundreds of hours doing stuff...

Since I put Safe in my "Do not call" list, I get the best of both possible worlds! I get to check in occasionally on his admittedly excellent craftsmanship and building skills, and not have to read the rest of his drivel. Works for me!

 What I say and what I build are one in the same.

So if you dislike my words then you "should" dislike my deeds... I'm a man of integrity. (my words and actions are an undivided unit)

47 Mph On The Flat

They repaved the road nearest my house that I use for my downhill speed runs. (I've found another place, but this was the original) After working on #003 most of this morning and looking at the beautiful weather I decided to go for a ride. This new pavement was so smooth and they managed to get rid of all the larger unevenness that used to be there. So when I make a run up the hill now... which is a long straight away... I get a lot more speed going. I used to be able to pull about 42-45 mph on the flat just before I started uphill, but now with the smooth as glass pavement I was able to pull 47 mph on the flat today.

Not bad... :)

After that good start I hoped that when I turned around and went back down the hill that I might set some other record. but I only managed 54 mph on the downhill side. Seems that aerodynamics plays a far bigger role than road smoothness. (plus my gearing actually peaks at 48.5 mph)

Oh well... :)

Okay... enough riding (and posting)... time to get back to work.

I just passed 5,203 miles today... :)

(which is pretty slow in logging miles because I've been working on #003 a lot)

Where are you getting your springs?
I got mine at ACE Hardware, they are the #96 if my memory serves me well. The contacts are copper though... I used "copper penny sized" contacts that directly connect the battery to the wire through the copper, so the springs are NOT, I repeat NOT the conductor.

Steel is a terrible conductor.

You want to bypass the steel and use copper contacts.

What was the verdict with Safe?
