We missed a phone call from my niece at around 1:30 this am. I just now learned why she called.

She had just returned from being away for the weekend to find the fire department at the house where she was renting a room. Apparently an electric scooter which was being stored and presumably charged indoors exploded, burning half of the house. I don't believe that it was her scooter but unfortunately all of her property was destroyed and sadly her pet rabbits were burned to death in the blaze.

I feel for the kid. We'll do what we can to help her get set up again, I just hope she can keep her head. She was already struggling with mental health issues and the past few years have been...yeah...

Hoping for the best.

Oh and as an avid vaper I'd like to remind everyone that counterfeit 18650's are an extremely widespread issue and are extremely difficult to spot. Not suggesting that is the cause of this fire, but unless you're sourcing your cells from known reputable vendors you shouldn't blindly trust that the cell under the wrapper is what it appears to be. Just as one bad apple spoils the bunch, one bad 18650 going thermal can cause a chain reaction that takes the entire pack and everything in it's surrounding area out with it. There is huge money in counterfeiting batteries and many bad actors out there who will put you at risk to increase their profits, so buy wisely. /psa

I can't express my feelings for her in words, having lost my four dogs (my fuzzy family) at the time to a house fire (not related to e-anything) six and a half years ago, and I'm not really normal, either.

But I more than empathize with her.

Everyone is different, but I recommend she at least go visit other fuzzy friends, of her favorite kind, even if she does not or cannot take them "home" herself yet.

It helped me tremendously to do this, and when I met Tiny, and eventually brought her home, she helped heal me like other people could never have done. I'm still not "over" what happened, don't know that I ever will be, but without Tiny, and Yogi, Teddy, and now Kirin and PeanutButter and Jelly, and Mouse (the cat), I doubt I would have gotten better at all.

Losing a loved one is a brutal experience as it is. Unexpectedly losing multiple loved ones and everything you own in one fell swoop is a trauma that pains me to even imagine. I can barely fathom trying to cope with that.
