Security/How To Prevent E-Bike Theft??

So, I'm low on funds and I cannot afford any setbacks like scumbag stealing something off my bike!! I'm in the process of setting up an ebike to get to work. I'm buying this little 26" 7-speed Kent Bayside Cruiser for $100 @ wallyworld. I already have a cheap rear hub motor kit w/ LCD and 52v 20ah lithium triangular battery. The battery and controller both have a bag with velcro straps to attach it to the frame. Does anyone have advice on how to make this setup a lot more theft proof (relatively cheap solution)? I mean I could put a bike lock on the tire and frame obviously but it would be pretty quick and easy to strip all of the other components. I am going to put a rear rack on this bike btw. Although, I'm not sure what's the best one to get..? I could also use some advice here too. I'm not a welder but if I need to in order to make this bike theft proof, I could probably get a buddy to give me a hand... Thanks for the help guys!!

Only one cheap way to theft proof, park it inside.

Of course, your work may not allow that. Definitely bring in the battery though, somehow. Controller and display can be made a bit more theft resistant by using some kind of secure bolt to mount it, then filling the head with epoxy, epoxy coat the nut, etc.

If you are parking in the scumbag place, they'll just take the whole bike anyway. Or just break off stuff attached to the bars for the fun. Ditch the display if at all possible. Tape down the wiring to make it less easy to yank on just for the fun of it. Make them settle for slashing your tires.

Maybe you need something small enough to bring inside work, a folding bike, or tiny scooter.

Maybe you need to forget an e bike to the job. Use it for other things, but not leaving it out for the crack heads. Bike and bus, with a 50 buck bmx bike or something like that.

This is really my only option because I'm out in the country with no license... I don't think I'll have to worry about people vandalizing it just for fun but who knows. Some people are assholes! I mean I am going to be taking it everywhere I have to go (I'm hoping I'll be allowed to take it on the bus but I'm not sure how that works) but for the most part, where I live, I believe what I'm going to run into is drug addicts stealing to support their habit. I will definitely take the battery with me. And I like the epoxy idea! Btw can you recommend a good bike lock?

Unfortunately, the only way to prevent any theft of bike or parts is to keep it right next to you and never let it out of your sight. In my personal experience, even having it inside with you at work is not a guarantee it won't be messed with, unless you work with completely trustworthy people and no one else has access to it.

There are dozens of things you might do to minimize the probabilities of theft, most of which have been posted in threads with one or more of these words in the title, if you do a search in thread titles, displayed by topic:

GPS
Thief
Theft
Steal*
Stolen
Secur*
Track*
Lock*
etc.

Here's a search link to a list of threads with any of those words in the title; not all results are relevant but you can tell from the titles which are.

Here's a search link to a list of threads with any of those words in the first post, but it has a lot more non-relevant results:

Oh cool thanks. Obviously, I'm not real familiar with this forum yet. So how do I delete this post? I can't figure out how to delete the whole string. Do I click delete all board cookies at the bottom? That won't delete all of my conversations will it?

Replace your quick release skewers on the non-hub motor wheel(s) with security skewers like Pinhead type. A hub motor wheel should be reasonably secure if you have torque arms on it. The torque arms take quite a bit of wrenching to remove, conferring considerable security on the wheel because of the time to remove them. That just leaves the frame. A good u-lock - maybe a Kryptonite New York is your best starting point for the frame - then stick to low probablity-for-theft scenarios - busy with people parking areas. Beyond that, it gets more esoteric.

To the op, not to discourage you but a battery operated angle grinder will cut thru just about anything. a folding bike you can carry is your best bet. JMO. Good luck in your journey. :D

No problem; I post that type of info for people that probably don't know it's already there. ;)

No reason to delete your thread, as you can always use it to gather and refine the ideas you're going to use on your bike to keep it yours. ;)

I don't see why you'd want to, but: the only way you can "delete" your posts is to edit them and replace their content. The original content is still available via the View Post History link in each edited post, but not display unless that is clicked.

As for cookies, I expect that's just stuff kept locally in your browser about your login info.

If it comes to bike theft, it is always on my mind when I ride to places.
In general I NEVER visit/enter the business where I cannot roll my ebike inside. PERIOD.
Even inside I always lock.
Usually I park my ebike between entrance doors.

Shouldn't be TOO hard... the dumbest on the planet like to have their pictures taken.

It's just not possible to secure a bike - ANY bike. If someone is out to get it, they will get it. Any cable-lock will take 1 second to cut over with a tool that fits in a large back-pocket. A U-lock as mentioned, is only 20 seconds with a portable powertool.

I would only take an e-Bike when I absolutely know that I can leave it safely unattended without the need for a lock (since pretty much all locks are useless if a professional bike-thief is out to get it).

If you live in a crackhead neighborhood I wouldn't get one at all.

GPS can be done with data plan on the cell phone
Some devices will text your cell phone.
There are movement alarms, whether audible or text or both.

If your bicycle looks ugly, then people will think you are cheap and will move to the nicer looking bikes.

In our city bike theft increased by like 30% ??
well Alberta oil ang gas bonanza is over and crime is up.
If I cannot roll my ebike indoors I am not visiting that place

Bike racks are for gullible, naive with no imagination in their brains
