I’m currently rebuilding a cargo bike with a Shimano STEPS system and I’m having trouble getting any power from it.
The setup is a Shimano EP8 cargo motor, Shimano BT-E8010 504Wh battery, Shimano SC-E5000 display, EW-SS301 speed sensor, and an SD300 cable between the display and motor. The battery mount is the Shimano external type with a separate upper locking piece and lower contact cradle. The issue is that the system shows no signs of life at all, the display does not turn on and there is no response from the motor. The battery appears to be working normally, as the LEDs show full charge and the charger behaves as expected. All E-Tube connections have been properly seated using the correct tool, and the speed sensor and display are connected. I measured the voltage at the two-pin power connector going into the motor and got 0V. The upper part of the battery mount was previously drilled to remove a stuck battery, but the lower part with the electrical contacts appears untouched. I’m trying to determine whether the battery should be outputting voltage continuously through the mount or if it requires a wake-up signal from the system, and whether a failure in the mount could cause this even if it looks fine externally. I’m also wondering if there are known cases where the battery shows full charge and accepts charging but does not deliver power to the system. What would be the best way to isolate whether the issue is with the battery, the mount, or the wiring to the motor before I start replacing parts?
