shorted ping power wires together...damaged battery?/

Hi guys,

stupid me was crimping my power wires of my new ping battery when the two power wires touched, shorted and sparked. How can I check if it has damaged my new battery?

If you just touched the leads together for a second it is unlikely you damaged the cells. But the BMS is another story though. I would just charge the pack up and check the voltage. If all is good don't worry about it.
 
Hope the BMS is fine!

Happened to me a few years ago when I was experimenting with my first ebike (BL36). I used my pliers to cut the neg and pos wires AT THE SAME TIME on my 48 volts SLA setup. :shock:

There was no fuse... The pliers were destroyed, the kitchen table had a big burned spot on it and I almost peed in my pants.

I learned a valuable lesson that day... And I am reminded of it every morning when I put my cereal bowl over the burned spot on the table.

So now,

- I always crimp my anderson connectors one at a time and only move to the second wire when the plastic casing is installed on the first one.

- I always have an in line fuse.

- I never fiddle with batteries and connectors on the kitchen table even if its zero degrees in the garage.
 
Hi guys,

I charged my new ping overnight with the supplied 4A ping charger. Woke up this morning and the light had turned to green on the charger and all 8 red led lights on the bms were alight also.

The battery in my voltmeter is flat so I cant check the voltage of the ping battery but will go to the shop this morning and get a new battery so that i can check.

when i turned the power off this morning on the charger once the light was green the 8 red bms lights then went down to only 3 red lights on. just wondered if this means anything??

no, they all go off at different times. too bad you missed the twinkling. that is neat. you will see that they all light in the same sequence time after time. and turn off with the twinkling going back and forth
 
Theoretically the bms would detect an over amp condition and shut off the battery preventing damage when the wires are shorted. Reversing the polarity is another story, and usually fries chargers or controllers.
