Well we all get sick of mud and rain in the face and on our controllers. i for one have always felt that bikes and their riders deserve fenders from the manufacturers and have always appreciated carefully sized and fitted ones. I remember as a kid my Raleigh 3 speed road bikes came with factory fitted fenders painted to match or even with a contrasting color. And they got banged around a fair bit. But i guess mountain bikes have changed all that.

How about a thread where we post our fender photos on our builds? I have seen numerous ones mentioned with photos in passing but yet to find a dedicated thread dedicated to just fenders- at least recently. They seem to range from nicely manufactured ones to the creative wild and funky. There's home made ones of formed plastic sheeting held on with duct tape, to wooden slabs steamed and bent, to cutoffs from a barrel. What a range. We need to see the Russian ones again with the how to. Anyone remember who that was with the bike in the tub?

These are the details that you get to after getting it on the road, but should be all the more fun and challenging!

So i'll start with my deal-funky as it is!

When i set out to find fenders for mine, I wanted something wide that would cover my 2.5 " wide tires, came with mounting arms, in steel cause I hated fiberglass and flimsy plastic, and hopefully i could adapt it somehow as my frame has no mounting tabs. So I went on Amazon and previewed dozens most of which were universal fitment, flimsy plastic and generally were too narrow. But i did come across these which I got

Amazon add (600 x 271).jpg

They are 3" wide and I liked the chrome finish and the delicate flare at the fender tips.

So here are a couple of photos with comments:

1. Bike sideview (600 x 450).jpg

2. Front fender (600 x 450).jpg

5. Rear fend side (600 x 450).jpg

6. Rear fender rear (600 x 450).jpg

So, lets see what you've got? Post away. Maybe we should have prizes for the nicest custom mounting and fitment and another for the wildest and most creative

I have those same fenders on my cruiser. They are nice but not light.
Remember to spray them with oil or vaseline from underside, otherwise they rust thru fast. Expecially if you keep your bike outdoors all the time.
Underside is just bare metal, and moisture with hammering tiny road stones does it"s job without guarding.

The main problem you have is that you have mounted your controller in the wet place. Even with fenders, it will get some water there.

I like to mount my controllers if possible, right behind the seat under my ass. My ass creates a wind shadow that shelters the controller when riding. And then the rear wheel splashes less straight up than the front wheel does at a 45 degree angle from the ground. So the fender works better on the back, for that spot.

Here is a shot that shows how I like to make a wide rear fender from soft foam, such as a fatigue mat. Works real good with the post mounted racks, after I put a second brace on it. The foam just attaches to the braces.Axxiom pannier rack and supports.jpg

The controller under my ass, but it can be mounted to the front of the rack, rather than a battery box as shown here. You still get some space left on the rack.

One of those double decker racks made for batteries would work real good for a mounting spot for a larger controller like you have. Controller nice and dry above the fender, and under the top deck of the rack.

I've had full wraps on other bikes but these are more "splash guards":

The originals didn't hold up very well but some Coroplast to replace the front resulted in better coverage and durability.
1photo.JPGrear required a completely custom mount and while not a full wrap it does keep the stripe off my back.

And yes, controller under the Ass appears to be an ideal location...

i modified a mudhugger rear to be telescopic so as to cover rear shock and batt.box

Electra Alloy Balloon Townie Fender Set

Had to make some adjustments to get these to work on my full-suspension 2WD ebike.
  • Front mounting to shock req'd an adapter which I constructed out of hard foam and balsa, then zip-tied in place at the top to the shock framework. Not terribly difficult to achieve... unlike the rear
  • Rear required a lot more thinking out of the box, and actually it was an evolutionary process. Req'd one prerequisite: Mounting the rear bike rack. If you can solve the bike rack problem then the fender mounting is eventually sorted. The final solution was the simplest - which works for me. The advantage of the bike rack is that it provides a nifty handle to lift and move the rear around when negotiating tight places.
  • The balloon style fenders offer the widest possible coverage for my phatty tires. At the time of purchase they were offered in both 24" and 26" which perfectly suited my needs.

And they look nice come rain or... er um, more rain

Love the DIY, here's the start of my front fender (see photo).

Layup will be 3 oz plain weave carbon on a bias, 3 x 3oz 'glass, a few 12K carbon tows then a final carbon layer.

All inspired by a scratch build I saw last month on ES but can't find (yet).

I'm unsure at this stage how I'll mount it and also unsure whether to make a tool to produce a few of these.

I'm another mudguard fan (fender is a guitar isn't it?) and wouldn't be without them for long. One got broken a couple of years ago and I found it awful riding in the rain without them.
You see the wet splash working up from a riders bum when they are walking around looks to be uncomfortable.

I've got a pair of chromplastic mudguards on my bike, no rear reflector cos it was a nicely priced shop clearance set.

Here is mine.

Just the regular Planet bike wide fenders. I had to get the strap on version and strap it on pretty tight. I also had to use some zip ties. See picture.

Even though the front looks like it's rubbing the wheel, it's not. It is held tight on the fork by some zip ties.

Mud is always an issue for me and it is an endless quest to find the proper solution.

I initially started with the "THE" fender from Ebay:
This was sadly almost completly useless.

full%20aline%20bike%201.JPG

I then reworked the front fender:
I scanned the front fork on the 3 D scanner as well as a new "THE mudguard" I bought from Ebay.
I then modelised a strong ABS adaptor plate to secure the fender in place.
With this methode, the fit between pieces is perfect and there is no movement at all.

Back to the rear fender:
I also made an attempt to improve the rear fender as it don't stop the mud efficiently.
I am also trying the Freeload rack to hold my Mudguard.
It's not as nice, but now the mudguard is actually stoping some mud...

At some point, I would like to make a rear fender custom for the bike in carbon fiber.
until then, I took an "UFO" mudguard made for a MX and fit it under the Freeload rack.
It IS ugly, but I have no more mud on my back.
