Anybody chop their Cycle Analyst, throttle, Hall-sensor wires lately? It's time to clean up the wiring on both my ebikes. I'm tired of having little zip-tied wire bundles all over my bikes. So, time to slice and dice.

All these cables (7 total on 2 bikes) are terminated in JST-SM connectors with varying pin counts. I'm going to chop the wires to length and install new terminals. A couple questions for the gurus before I order parts and get out the wire cutters.

1. Can I re-use the housings I have now if I pull the current pins out?

2. If so, then I just need the pins. Here's the cheapest U.S. supplier I found. Look good?

3. This cheap crimper was recommended in another thread. Can anyone confirm that it'll work for JST-SM pins?

Seems like that gives me a lot more chances to screw up something serious, especially since I'd need to do the same with controllers to get at the Halls. My original plan was just to chop the wires in the middle, solder splice them and new shrink wrap. With about 20 wires to do though it seems like a reasonably good $10 crimp tool would do it cleaner and easier. If a decent crimPer is more like $40, then I'll be soldering.

Could just clip the wire fairly close to the CA, Splice and solder each wire and shrink tube it, then put larger shrink tube to finish off. Thread the last large tube on the wire before you start soldering. A bit crude, but not real noticeable down on the controller.

if you are going to just cut the wire in the middle, why do you need a crimper? You can also use a needle nose plier, if you are careful.

That's why a much easier splice not at the plug would be acceptable to me. Some would be horrified by that approach though. To some extent, all my bikes are frankenbikes.

Working with those small plug housings and contacts is a pain for me, I still lack a really good soldering station with holders. And barely can see that small stuff. But twist a wire, put a drop of solder on it, easy peasy.
