So I fell of and was in Hospital

I wear a shoei superbike helmet, and superbike gloves no matter what (if I'm going to ride deathbike). This is because I'm riding in a way where crashes aren't merely obscure rarities, they are like a planned-on part of the experience, and it gets old having your head and hands all ding'd up after a while.

If I'm gonna be racing at a track or something, full superbike leathers along with superbike gloves and superbike helmet. It's always kinda amazing to me how it can turn crashing (which normally results in hurting for weeks) into something that's like a non-event other than some sore muscles and bruising.

Cheers for the words guys :D

I was wearing my body armour motor bike jacket with gloves. Right hand glove is totalled and left hand blue with bruising....shoulder hurts from impact but jacket armour took the impact.

Just over a year ago I broke both arms from an ebike fall, Ulna and Radius just below the elbow but........I was wearing a full face helmet and whilst I was knocked unconscious for a min my head was ok.

The helmet was totalled, my head .....well I would probably be dead looking at the state of the helmet.

Wear a helmet, it's not worth the risk.

Oh, I was recently diagnosed with greatly reduced periphery vision...had no idea personally....might have something to do with the bike crashes lol.

Getting that fixed soon. Was knocked out for 2 days by a car hitting my right eye socket when I was ten... optometrist thinks maybe I might have had some trauma around that time due to the right eye being out of alignment with the left eye....and my brain having to work really hard to join the images....and also the greatly reduced periphery vision.

Ho hum......

The accident was the same day work banned me from using their vehicles after my eye test....

you guys are so lucky. if that had happened in the US, you would have a $100k hospital bill by now. the hospital would sue you and force you into bankruptcy and destroy your credit so you could not get a job or a credit card or ever borrow money to buy anything.

we have nothing like what you guys have for medical coverage. the republicans are gonna even destroy what little itty bitty medical coverage we got with obamacare.

i think there were 55 pedestrians and bicyclists killed by cars here last year. we have two or three hit and runs every week here, not all are fatal but usually it ends up ruining the life of the person they leave behind in the street since nobody can even afford the $2k ambulance ride and $15k/day hospitalization costs.

I suppose it is one of the few good points about living in the UK.

Funniest thing was that I woke up in hospital on my own and thought I was in a Zombie hospital and armed myself with a drip stand only to be sent back by a nurse.

They had to write on a piece of paper everything they had told me because they were fed up repeating themselves.

So how many bike wrecks /near miss events is that you have had now ?
I would never prevent anyone doing whatever they get kicks from, but..
..If i were you , i would seriously rethink my commuter options for the future

Why else would you surprise attack a 6'8", 400 lb guy in bike club colors?

Maybe he didn't like spandex?

That's not really my bike club's style.

Just so you guys know, the amount of cyclists/bikers here in Austin who wear 'normal' clothes FAR outnumber the spandex roadies (I'm one of both crowds, myself).

I know in other parts, most of the cyclists are the spandex roadies. But we have a pretty big bike scene, so lots of street clothes riders.

As far as helmets go, I wear one on my ebike because I like to push the bike in corners and take small risks. Also because of the other idiots on the roads. I have a DOT open face helmet, but only wear it when it's below 50 deg F, for the warmth. Next, I wear a snowboarding helmet (like a bike helmet), then a skate helmet, then my cyclist helmet with all the vents for when it's above 75 F. If I'm going 12mph in the neighborhood with my gf, I usually won't wear a helmet. I almost always make her wear one when we are actually going somewhere.

It's just not that big of a deal to put a helmet on. I hit my head FAR more often on the garage door and things hanging in the garage than I do on my bike. I haven't hit my head since 2005 in a criterium (spandex roadie) race, when someone took me out in the last corner, cracked my helmet.

I try to always wear gloves, but when it's hot I skip them, especially if I am making lots of stops.

Sorry to hear about your crash Spacey. Could've been a lot worse, so don't feel so bad. As others said - always wear a lid!

I kinda picture Elvis walking up to a bunch of bikies "you all pussies for riding with shockers and disc brakes"
Wham!

Wow, glad to hear it wasn't worse. Pretty obvious that a typical bike helmet wouldn't have helped much for this one. Looks to me like you landed on your face more than the skull. At normal pedal speeds, it's a bit overkill to break out the full face helmet and leathers. I'll still tell people riding motorcycle speeds that motorcycle clothing is a good idea. Unless you just dig letting your dogs lick your road rash.

Your big mistake was not riding without a helmet, it was thinking a turn signal bore any relationship whatsoever to what the car was going to do. Don't let em suprise you, assume they will try to kill you every time.

Once screwed, next time lay it down and hit shit with your feet.

Spacey - Happy you are alive!

The dead baby bike race is a boosed up and well attended race/ride with a big ol party at the end. It's lots of fun, last one I went to had pedal powered carnival rides.

The shirt I have has the spokes going through the baby...brutal
