Hi all, I'm just doing some thinking about a bmx build and I was considering a chainwheel mounted to a disc adapter.
I've been looking online and I have found one bmx hub that has a disc mount. http://www.profileracing.com/estore2/index.php?productid=246
It's a real nice hub and all, but the $223 price tag is putting me off. after buying a rim and lacing it up it's going to cost $300+ just for the rear wheel
:?: does anyone know of another company that makes a similar hub? I kinda doubt it, but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask.

I used the Currie USPD rear wheel hub from evdeals for a single speed build and it may work for you. This is not a flip flop hub. You could uses the threaded adapter, that evdeals sales, or a left hand freewheel and adapt a sprocket to it. All for about 1/2 the price of the bmx hub.

BMX hubs are 110-115mm OLD, Bubba

I have a Profile Racing Bi-Drive hub - looks like they've got rid of their old stock, now, though...

The best one, if you can find it secondhand, is the DK Dual Drive. Winstanleys still have some old stock 48h ones: http://www.winstanleysbmx.com/product/3992/DK_Dual_Drive_Rear_Hub

Don't know if this will work, but 32H, disc brake, 9T sprocket....$170 (+ shipping/tax)

thanks for all the replies

the DK dual drive is very cool, except I'd rather have 36h and 3/8 axle and a 9t driver

I looked at tartybike.com and didn't see anything that matched the profile. they have a bunch of hubs that are 116mm spacing which I've never seen,.

the Geisha is 135mm.

It's still looking like the profile hub is the best option. the fact that it has a 9t driver makes it even more appealing for pedaling at high speeds. with only a 48t chainwheel you get 5.3:1 ratio which should be good for pedaling around 25mph
I guess they can charge such a high price cause they're the only one who makes them.
I thought about trying to make a hub w/ a 9t driver on the lathe, but the inner ratchet part would be tough. it has to be threaded into the shell, made of hardened steel, and broached (I think) to get the ratchet teeth.

BMX uses 110mm in the rear. I think the only hubs you'll be able to find are the DK flavors that are new-old-stock (NOS). Winston Stanley is the only place I know of that still sells them brand new, but they only have 14mm/48h hubs left and charge a fortune.

You can find the NOS DK macho hubs for ~$50 on ebay, which I think is the less expensive version of DK's actual "dual drive" hub that only takes 13T-14T freewheels.

Here's some other resources for a LHD/RHD hubs if you've got the dropout spacing for 126+ mm

Chinese scooter hub; 36H You'll need to pull out the axle, flip it around and pup it back into the hub. That will allow a 7 spd freewheel on the right and single speed on the left. ~$40

Staton hub for chain drive; 28H, 32H, 36H, 48H, I think this one can take up to a 8-9spd freewheel on the right, single speed on the left. ~$125

Modern bmx bikes use the same 100mm fork spacing as mountain bikes. Just find a disc mountain hub you like.
He is looking for a rear hub.........

Matt

I realized two seconds after I hit submit, but forgot to delete the post

Good info in this thread! That choppers hub is just the ticket!

I'm looking for somthing simliar for a pair of folding 20" bikes which use a SA8(w) (I think it's 115 or 120mm) with no options... I think with proper spacers I could fit a 3-5spd freewheel onto that choppersrus hub and still do a direct drive to the left from the motor... I can always upgrade the front to a multi chainring to gain some speeds and hill climbing ability.

Good find!

I have one of the chopper usa hubs also,
I think mud likes the bmx casett hubs cause he can get an 11, 10 or even 9tooth driven sprocket on thouse. the smallest freewheel for the 1.375x24 is 16 teeth.

It must be the low volume the drives the price of bicycle hubs so high. I am constantly amazaed at the prices these guys ask for some bicycle stuff.

Those hubs have 177mm axle length, I am guessing a 7,8 or 9sp freewheel could be added to the axle and eBike.ca has those with 11t as the smallest teeth..

In truth I would prefer a cassette that I could adjust and change out gears on but I've only found some in the 200+ dollar range for hubs and rimsets which would likely fit in a bmx dropout...
