Speedometer? Brakes?

I've been thinking about how nice it would be, to have mechanical brakes (also for some certification, i might need better brakes then the ESC can give me)

Did anyone ever add that to a skateboard wheel? If so, how?

Also, speedometer would be nice to have. Was thinking of trying a tachograph for detecting wheel RPM but that not work so well.
Might just put some halleffects around the motor, add some maff and calculate wheel velocity from motor RPM .. hmhm

Any suggestion? Builds i should see? :D

Given you already have a remote, there is no point having a second control is there?

Have you considered the option of modifying a controller so that instead of applying electronic brakes, it turns a servo that is connected to drum brakes? Mechanical brakes could be an issue fitting the brakes on the wheels/trucks along with the motors, unless you go front/rear power and brake combo systems.

COuld prove an interesting challenge!
 
But i agree that a electronic/mechanic brake controlled from the remote would be a LOT nicer :/
Hmmz ...

I also saw some people putting those clamp style brakes from a bike, inverted from the inside of the truck, so the brakepads point outside. Could be a interesting method. And i could just 3d print a pivoting holder for that, so that mounting of the brake does not alter the board.. hmmhmhm
 
sune pedersen's ondaboard has servo actuated bike disc brakes, he's posted up on here (and all the STL files on thingiverse)
 
How hard do you need your brakes? Are you running a dual motor setup?

I adjusted my trim on my GT2B to 3 and brakes to 100% and it's pretty hard even on a steep hill about 20-25% degree hill to roll down when I engage on brakes. Of course, I need a bit of momentum to engage brakes but once I have it it's stuck. Typically, I keep my brakes a bit lower that way I can run at 15-20mph and engage the entire throttle for brakes and it will slowly stop me without throwing myself off.

I could almost stop in the middle of the hill. I would have to double check again and verify for you.

I use to think I needed better brakes and even have a Brakeboard and was going to mount two motors on the front truck but the electric brakes work great and doubt I'd need it.

However, if you do need it.

1. You can always go the brakeboard route and change the front truck for motors. (mechanical disc brakes)
2. You can always add a band brake similar to "beto"'s build and connect it to a servo.
