There seems to have been a few important / historic threads that have been scavenged by auto-pruning. There's the oft-talked about "Empire Thread" that I've never witnessed but yet I hear so often reminisced from the longer established users.

So, why not take a "snapshot" of the forums? What does it take make a digital copy of the forums so that these mini-tragedies don't happen again? If someone else is willing to offer the hosting, then what are the potential problems to the original owner?

Last time I checked the forum stats, I believe the total data storage was less than gigabyte, LOL. I think members could easily host that on their own computers and set up their own mini-server. I would be more than willing to do it. Even if the total download bandwidth is limited to a meager 50 kBps from a lousy home-internet connection, that's far better than the current 0.

"HTTrack is a free (GPL, libre/free software) and easy-to-use offline browser utility.

It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the "mirrored" website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system.

WinHTTrack is the Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP release of HTTrack, and WebHTTrack the Linux/Unix/BSD release."
