wowzers... i just spend 2.5 hrs in -15 celcius with 60 to 90 kph ( makes it feel like -27 c ) winds clearing out the snow drifts from my driveway, i know we crack jokes about being tough Maritimers and that snow ain't a big deal, but this is pretty nuts... i had bare pavement in one spot and a 6ft drift next to it..

I'm fortunate to have an empty field across my street, i blew as much as i could over there but the wind decides where it goes.. can't imagine those in the city core with no place to put it.. i'm sure there are plenty of domestic dispute calls going on.

At one point i had a huge pile well over 12ft tall (* as high as a 12 HP blower will throw it ) and it gave way into an avalanche and buried me lol, that was fun.

time for bed and do it all over again in the morning... i'm so glad to be self employed and not having to find excuses to not show up for work.... bosses are brutal..

Shit. That"s a lot of white stuff.
We don"t have any really, but eight hours of sunshine in january. Eight hours.

i wonder if he could vacuum all that snow out with a wet/dry vac while the temperature is still cold enuff to keep it in powder state so it could be lifted. shovel most out with cardboard until the last of the powder is still in all the cracks and then go after it with the W/D vac.

my daffodils are gonna open up today, sun out already, gonna be mid 60s here. maybe 65!

i think this polar vortex redirection of the jet stream is gonna be a long term winter phenomena because this blocking high on the left coast is now a regular event as the north pacific warms more and more. it is as thought the california drought has moved north to oregon.

so the east coast could be in for decades of this kinda winter weather, maybe centuries.

I don't miss digging out at all. Done the car full of it thing too many times too. My solution was to get on the highway with all of the windows down. It all blew right out. :)

Stay warm up there.

Open up all the doors and get at that with a leaf blower before any of it melts!

This one is mine tho..

The weather strip at the bottom of my garage door is frozen flat and does not seal well, letting heavy winds push snow inside... so i put a blanket at the bottom to block the wind... but it shot a drift straight up !!..

Man it seems like such a waste of time, to clean something up you know will disappear by itself, if you only wait long enough....
And i know many cities impose fines if you dont clesr the sidewalk in front of your property, who has time for all this on a normal workday?

It's so much more than that, when this shit melts it can cause serious issues if you don't pile it in the right places.. and when it melts partially and freezes again, it's impossible to do anything with it unless you got jack hammers and lots of time... best thing to do is keep at it as they come along.

When I approached my wife with the prospect of moving to an isolated area where it snows... she had a positive response. :?

Eeeeeeven after that time she and I got snowed in on a mountain top totally unprepared.
She must have forgotten :D

Now in my mind... when I want to empathize with you sad bastards... all I have to do is pull up the mental slide of a ski trip that I took a thousand years ago when I barged out of the motel room... took a huge breath of the damn coldest air I have ever experienced... then went running back inside. That shit is ice cold burning hell!

Why you guys want to live inside of my freezer... er... uh... I have no idea.
Tough you are for sure.

And that-
Ladies and gentlemen...
Is why I am now going to go try and offset your position by taking a dip at the beach. 8)

It has been sunny and reasonable
Not hot or warm... but with a wetsuit + under suit + booties + hoodie + helmet + near constant kicking + adrenalin... it works.

I heard the water at Lake Tahoe is DAMN COLD. Frost your flakes cold...

Good thing EV's come with built in battery heaters.

And I thought we had it bad in Mi. I didn't even go out this weekend due to sub freezing temps. Ypedal, your winters must last longer than mine. I'm ready for spring, which usually starts to happen here around April. So tired of winter, heading down to Florida at the end of the month for a break. Only for a long weekend, but cabin fever is getting to me this year.

Methods, has it good. All year without the white stuff and surfing too! He needs to get some kiteboarding gear!

I keep looking at fat bikes as a possible winter activity. Are the wheels actually stable in a snow ice mix? I just imagine falling when hitting an ice patch. Studded tires was something I concidered last year, but never acted on it. What makes a fat bike fun for you?

Packed snow is ideal, any distance on solid grey ice is a no-go unless you got studs ..

The big fat tires are a perfect suspension for a heavy bike if you inflate them just right and the tire selection matters.

Currently running a 350w front geared motor ( shunt mod for 30 amps, but at 36v it only draws 30 amps at a near dead stop.. ) and it's perfect for slow controllable crawler and in very cold weather you really don't want to be going fast ( frost bite... ) . going slow and pedaling along to keep warm is a really fun experience ..

In my area, bike lanes and riding on streets is not cool, i stick to trails and side roads as much as possible, just happens i have the ideal track in my back yard.

I never thought of it that way before! Twas -18.9 degF on Monday morning when I got up at 6am, and was only -15.3 degF this morning at the same time. Never thought I was living in our freezer before... snow is piled so high my ATV with plow has no where to push it to. Of course my backhoe won't start at these temperatures. I borrowed neighbors front end loader to widen my drive and make the piles higher... was doing well for a while but I think the diesel started to gel... got it back in her garage for a warm up. Multiple friends with frozen pipes. My furnace was running 33 minutes on and 3 minutes off yesterday. Think we are getting close to hell freezing over! :D

For ice I keep my feet on the ground and use the bike as an additional stabilizing aid. Strap some tire tread to your boots and use the ebike as propulsion. Its quicker than walking and safer too, unless you have spikes on your soles.

I bought my used nokian studded tires off craigslist. $100 for pair. Been using them 2 years. Well worth it.

Beautiful sunny weather today, Buffalo NY

frozen pipes
Yea. Ice in the toilet. Ice in the sink. Pipes frozen and broke

To let it be known...... Two family house up and down. Two natural gas hot air furnaces in the basement. Heat rises. Marty the idiot thought that the upper furnace would provide enough heat in the lower apartment to prevent the pipes from freezing. Marty thought wrong.

Lower tenant of many years called to tell me that upper tenant broke into his apartment and stole his stuff. He gave notice and moved out. I was a idiot for not putting the gas and electric in my name. Robbery is a minor problem compared to the last issue with tenants. That was murder.

Tomorrow going to the court. The (tenant robbers) will be getting what I call the double whammy. Nonpayment Petition and Notice To Terminate. Pay February rent NOW and also move out by March 31st, 2015. Any one want to buy a house?

Hopefully a kerosene heater in the basement and a second one in the kitchen should solve the frozen water problem. Gas is getting turned on Thursday.
kerosene-heaters.jpg

I got a older kerosene heater with no wire on the top. Have used it to heat coffee and water. Could be used to cook food. When I bought kerosene today the girl at the gas station ask to see my ID. I ask why? She said "Because kerosene can be used to build a bomb" Can't the kerosene bombers play safe? Notice kerosene is dyed red?
Kerosene - Why is it now RED?
Guess our wise government decided the we need to breathe the fumes from red dye. This must be great for the makers of red dye. Going to buy kerosene from the Indian gas station from now on. Last time I bought it, it had no dye. Indians around here sell gas and cigarettes with no taxes.

Got to go fill the kerosene heaters.

Sorry for all the complaining. Beautiful sunny weather today!
