That's a LOT of snow.....

Multiple friends with frozen pipes.

why don't y'all have electric warmers/heaters on the pipes themselves, inside the insulation around the pipes?

It wouldn't take much power to keep them from freezing, vs the wasted power you may have from heating areas/rooms that aren't used but have pipes in their walls, etc. (plus that when you get cold enough temps, the heat leakage from the rooms into outer walls isn't enough to keep the pipes warm enough anymore...which begs the question of why in freezing climates anyone would isntall pipes in outer walls in the first place..but I know they do).

Think we are getting close to hell freezing over! :D
Y'all stole our winter...we've got April temperatures here in February (and even late January) in Phoenix. It's been well over 80F a few days, though down to nearly 40F some of the same nights. Usually we have some cold weather still in Jan and Feb but except for the few rainy days we seem to ahve lost a couple of months of cold.

Even my poor frostbitten lantana that all looked dead after the few nights of freezing and 40F days, back in December, has begun seriously greeening back up--the stuff int eh front yard you almost wouldn't know it had ever lost leeaves, and the stuff in back is working on it. Even the Mulberry trees are starting to bud new leaves already. They all think it's spring....

I kinda miss the cold (for Phoenix values of cold :p) but I can say for sure I don't miss the snowdrifts higher than the windows. We got that kind of thing in Texas one winter of the four or five I spent there as a kid, and while as a kid they were fun I doubt I'd've enjoyed them if I had to do what y'all are doing, or if it'd lasted long enough /cold enough to burst pipes.

'Course, we gotz our summerz of fryin' fun here instead, where 120F is gettin' toasty, and 130F is awful hot.

Marty since #2 diesel, home heating #2 and kerosene are all very close, if not now identical, in distillation curves... I think the red dye is for diesel on which no road tax was paid. The stuff they use in backhoes and excavators. If the state patrol pulls your truck over and finds red diesel in the tank you are fined. I think that is what the story is. Asking for ID to buy diesel/kerosene is just crazy. Another sign of an out of control nanny government. ... day by day I understand more the famous "Give me liberty or give me death..." statement by Patrick Henry.

The local transit agency plowed their parking lot snow in front of a safe bike path. Some of my friends decided access must be restored. So between about 8 people, 4 days and 40 total person-hours, we dug a tunnel through the snow pile big enough to cycle through!

Agh! Portsmouth Sinfonia! :pancake: Sends shivers down my spine.

Amber, the pipes are in spaces and dead walls in the houses. They are typically fine at the normal temperatues we live in... like down to zero. When you go 20 below zero for all night strange temperature differences happen within wall cavities and it is highly dependent upon the wind speed. This week we got -20 degF and a lot of wind. Strange things happen.

In the refugee house, one of the maintenance guys put a ceiling panel back up that had been out for years. We never knew why it was out.. well it left heat into a soffit space that kept the upstairs bathroom pipes from freezing. We figured that out after the pipes froze. We were very lucky that none of the pipes burst in that house.

Ah...I guess I still find it strange that houses are not built to handle weather that comes along even just once in 10 or 20 years--I expect a house to last at least 10 times that, if kept up, though perhaps I am unreasonable. ;)

I know that here in Phoenix, for instance, most houses are not even built for the summers we have, or even the spring or fall, in that they aren't insulated well or designed to minimize heat leakage into the house, or shading the right spots at the right times of day. It can cost a small fortune for some people to cool their houses.

They also arent' designed to handle any rain worse than a few minutes' drizzle, with no gutters, no drainage away from the house, etc., for the most part, and nothing to keep doorways "clear" of roof runoff so you can at least go in and out of the house in a decent rain without walking thru a sheet of water, and having your legs and shoes covered in splattering mud. :/

(and it took several floods over the last 30 years or more to get drainage on streets improved enough in some areas to make them usable in anything worse than a good rain--a downpour for more than a few minutes will still make a lot of roads and streets, even major ones, unnavigable without a boat)

Ooops. Something similar happened to a friend's parent's house up in Kingman, AZ, which does get freezing temps in the winter, and ended up with burst pipes over the kitchen and carport, which I think was also after "fixing" a set of vents in the cielings.

I've almost made it through this whole winter in a hammock tent! lol My water did freeze once though. I put the bottle between my thighs for a few minutes and it thawed right out though.

I used to work on people's houses and cars and the sheer idiocy of the design and construction drove me nuts. Now when someone wants home or auto repair advice, I recommend a tent or offer to help them design and build an ebike. No more turd polishing for me! Never understood why bald monkeys would choose to live in places where they'd die if they didn't have crap to burn to keep them warm.

I guess one solution to sustainably surviving winters up north could be earthships though. There's one in Rico, CO that a doctor built and he actually has to keep most of the shades closed during the winter so it doesn't roast him out! The garage is 2 foot thick rastra block and stays 50f all year.

This is one in Ridgway, CO. My ex and I almost bought it! No external heating required.

Lower tenant of many years called to tell me that upper tenant broke into his apartment and stole his stuff. He gave notice and moved out. I was a idiot for not putting the gas and electric in my name. Robbery is a minor problem compared to the last issue with tenants. That was murder.

Tomorrow going to the court. The (tenant robbers) will be getting what I call the double whammy. Nonpayment Petition and Notice To Terminate. Pay February rent NOW and also move out by March 31st, 2015. Any one want to buy a house?

Snow is not melting :? We don't remove snow. We move it from one place to another. Piles are getting higher and higher.

Eviction court date is Friday. My wife is my process server. She hands the eviction papers to the (tenant robbers). Served papers last Wednesday. On Thursday I noticed the refrigerator in the lower apartment was missing. Called the police. Not sure when it disappeared? I had left the door to the lower apartment open so the upper tenant could check on the frozen / broke pipes. Both upper and lower apartments share a common hallway. Any one want to buy a house?

Go the hot water to the upper repaired. Replaced copper pipe with PEX. Pulled it up the wall with string. This was my first experience working with PEX. I like PEX. Goes together fast. Bought these tools.
WATTS PEX WPCATK-1 "Crimp-All" Crimping Tool Kit with 3/8-Inch to 3/4-Inch Jaw Sets
CrimpAllToolKit.jpg

Harvard Ratchet PVC Pipe Cutter - 1/2" - 1 1/4"

The only thing worse then a thief is a stinky thief. Now the upper tenants have hot water. Mom, dad, and a daughter.

PEX is all i use anymore. a got a 1/2" and 3/4" crimping tool out of a 5 gallon bucket full of water where they had been rusting for 4 years. just junk to some people. i think you now know what they cost.

it was rusted solid so i had to put it in the coals of the woodstove and get it hot enuff to break the rust free so i could operate the compound crimper lever. it finally operates freely. i used a lot of polybutylene tubing for hot water hydronic radiant floor heating systems up until it became illegal after the lawsuit. now i just use PEX. never splits when it freezes.

Eviction got adjourned to this Friday. I ask why? Judge wants the day off. I said "Tell the judge to have fun"

Its times like this I am happy with where I live.. it was 80* yesterday. it is 78* now. bright blue sky, sunny.... and my only complaint is "what do you mean my package is delayed by weather?!" when I order online.

Is that your 'Keep On Ebikin' pose? 8)

Hi Gaston

At least i get to try my recently repaired snow blower

Parts should ship via DHL so once i get a tracking number they should be here in a week or so.. but i'm still waiting on that tracking number..
