I got informed that a new ebike designed especially for older people ( 50+) that is using belt drive.

It was entirely developped by the company PROCYCLE and is a Canadian company that has manufactured bicycles since 1977

The E-vox is not using any hub motor and any geared motor to the chain.. but just a belt and pulley with clutch.

The motor is located in the bottom bracket, giving the bicycle a lower centre of gravity for a safe and comfortable ride.

Not our usual monstruous performances... but might interest older crowd due to his easy handling

Looks pretty good. Brushed motor? The controller appears fairly small.

Loses the advantages of through the gear drive like a bb drive. But also can't be run in too high a gear smoking the motor or just blowing the battery capacity with amp spikes. No gear noise either.

Good placement of the battery. Hope it's not lead.

Good to see a new bike designed by an engineer instead of a "designer".

From what i saw on the video interview, it's a dc brushed motor.

Looks nice. What's the price? Specs?

Looks pretty good, but the press release doesn't really say it's just for "50+" (if it were, I would take major offense), but also for Yuppies, in other words, a commuter bike. That works for me (except for snow and/or black ice).

It's got "lithium" batteries, I'd guess LiFePO4 for use by the general public, and a charger in the rear rack for 1C charge rate. Not too shabby here.

Since they got these above right, IMHO, they should have used a brushless motor, for an (almost) no-maintenance ebike. Let's see what pricing will be.

"Snappy tune, a little awkward to dance to, I'll give it a 76, Dick."

I'm 50+ and that bike might be designed for my grandmother, but certainly not me.

John.. you are an exception 8)

My brother-in-law mailed me a full page spread from the newspaper. Price is $3500.

I don't know where they get this age appropriate stuff? I wouldn't buy this POS if it was $750 as It does not come close to my $20 bike from the Goodwill Store, with 1KW Frock and 12ah 48V. I would like to have my battery where this one is, but that is just waiting for a warm day to cut and weld in some Al Channel which is waiting.

Guys.. I discussed with this bicycle representative today diring a bicycle expo in Quebec and the guy said they are working with brushless motor... at ... 96V DC !!!.. these guiys are using 30s lifepo4 !!!

That's a premiere in the standard commercial normal electric bicycle i think.!

yes... 96Volts battery

I know that's more risky to have problems of cell out of balance since there is more serie cells but let see over the time how well it work. after all.. Bionx are now at 48V... and us at... 125-150V max now.. so... 8)

I wonder why they built it with such voltage, for a bike that has to be limited to legal speed. What is the motor that they use?

Hmm, thats more interesting for sure. Pretty good on hills compared to a weak igh hubmotor I suppose?

I was assuming it was your typical 350 w, 10 amps at 36v kind of setup. Bet it keeps the motor rpm nice and high at 30s lifepo4.

So then you're saying that the cost (while high compared to DIY bikes) may be justified for someone that wants turn-key?

Since the motor can be wound to match whatever voltage, to me the advantages are:
1. Higher voltage means lower current and smaller gauge wire required for the same power.
2. Maybe the charger is more efficient since it's converting AC to a DC voltage closer to equal.
3. In the battery itself, a higher series count means if one cell is low, the difference is spread over more cells and less likely to cause harm to the rest of the string.

If the motor is brushed, it is the current that erodes the brushes the most. Raising the volts and lowering the amps would be a huge benefit for the life of the brushes, but...even then, I have found that most brushes are not too hard to change when they are worn.

Also, brushed controllers seem to be much more affordable than brushless.

I actually had a chance to exchange with the designer of this ebike on a french forum.

Here are some specs and details he shared with us.

It comes with 2 options for batteries. 96v 4.2 ah and 96v 6.25 ah. 400wh and 600 wh.

The motor is brushless and they had it specifically designed for their purposes. They claim 1000 Nm of torque on the rear wheel with their 250 watt motor. Which they paired with a controller they also had designed for their specific with a 2.5a current limit.

It is a nice ebike that is for sure. But slightly pricey that will take it out of range of most potential 50+ buyers.

Here is a url to the exchange with the designer, but it is all in french. http://veloelectriquequebec.forumactif.ca/t299-velo-electrique-evox-fait-au-quebec#1591

From the forum thread that you linked:
Notre moteur est unique à nous et est fabriqué selon nos spécifications je ne connais pas exactement le KV de notre moteur, mais nous générons un couple de 1000Nm à la roue arrière avec une puissance de moteur d'environ 250Watts.
